Nearly và Close To Là Gì?

Định Nghĩa

Nearly là trạng từ (adverb) chỉ mức độ gần với một con số, thời gian, hoặc trạng thái nào đó, có nghĩa là “gần như”, “hầu như”, “xấp xỉ”.

Close to là cụm giới từ (prepositional phrase) có nghĩa tương tự “gần với”, “xấp xỉ”, nhưng có cấu trúc ngữ pháp và vị trí khác trong câu.

Chức năng chính:

• Diễn đạt số liệu không chính xác: Thay vì nói “49%”, dùng “nearly 50%” nghe tự nhiên hơn
• Tránh lặp từ trong Writing Task 1: Khi mô tả nhiều số liệu, xen kẽ “nearly” và “close to”
• Thể hiện sự ước lượng trong Speaking: Không cần nhớ chính xác số liệu

Khi nào dùng trong IELTS:

Lỗi Thường Gặp & Cách Sửa

Lỗi 1: Dùng “Close To” Thiếu Động Từ

❌ SAI:

“The percentage was close to 50% of students failed the exam.”

“In 2023, close to 100 tourists visited the museum.”

✅ ĐÚNG:

“The percentage of students who failed the exam stood at close to 50%.”

“In 2023, the number of tourists visiting the museum reached close to 100.”

Giải thích:

“Close to” là cụm giới từ, không thể đứng đầu câu hoặc đứng trước danh từ không có động từ. Luôn cần động từ chính (was, stood at, reached, rose to) đứng trước “close to”.

Lưu ý:

Trong Speaking, người bản xứ đôi khi nói “close to 100 people came”, nhưng trong Writing Task 1 (academic), cấu trúc này không được khuyến khích. Luôn đặt động từ trước.

Cách nhớ: Close to = giới từ → cần động từ như “to the shop” cần “go” → “go to the shop”

Lỗi 2: Nhầm Lẫn Vị Trí “Nearly”

❌ SAI:

“The population in 2024 is 50% nearly of the total.”

“Students nearly 200 participated in the survey.”

✅ ĐÚNG:

“The population in 2024 is nearly 50% of the total.”

“Nearly 200 students participated in the survey.”

Giải thích:

“Nearly” luôn đứng trước số lượng hoặc danh từ mà nó bổ nghĩa. Không đặt “nearly” sau số hoặc sau danh từ.

Pattern đúng:

• Nearly + số + danh từ: Nearly 200 students
• Nearly + phần trăm: Nearly 50%
• Nearly + all/every/half: Nearly all participants

Lưu ý:

Với động từ, “nearly” có thể đứng trước động từ chính: “The project nearly finished” (nhưng nghĩa khác – “suýt hoàn thành” chứ không phải “hoàn thành gần 100%”)

Lỗi 3: Dùng “Close To” Với Tính Từ

❌ SAI:

“The task was close to impossible to complete.”

“The weather became close to cold in the evening.”

✅ ĐÚNG:

“The task was almost impossible to complete.”

“The weather became nearly cold / quite cold in the evening.”

Giải thích:

“Close to” chỉ dùng với:

• Danh từ số lượng (close to 50%)
• Danh từ cụ thể (close to the target)
• V-ing (close to finishing)

Không dùng với tính từ đơn. Dùng “almost” hoặc “nearly” thay thế (tùy context).

Exception:

“Close to perfect” được chấp nhận vì “perfect” có thể coi như một trạng thái/mục tiêu cụ thể, nhưng “almost perfect” tự nhiên hơn.

Lỗi 4: Lặp Lại Cùng Một Từ Trong Writing Task 1

❌ SAI (Band 6):

“In 2020, the figure was nearly 50%. By 2023, it increased to nearly 70%. The projected figure for 2025 is nearly 80%.”

✅ ĐÚNG (Band 8):
