I’d like to talk about Mr. Thanh, an elderly gentleman who lives in my neighbourhood. He is around 75 years old and I first met him about two years ago when I moved to my current apartment.

Since then, we often meet in the morning when he does gardening and I go for my morning walk. Sometimes we have coffee together and he tells me stories about his life.

Sau hơn 20 năm ngồi đối diện với hàng ngàn thí sinh, tôi muốn chia sẻ những insights quan trọng giúp bạn maximize điểm số:

Những Điều Examiner Thực Sự Đánh Giá Cao

1. Natural Communication Over Perfect Grammar

Nhiều học viên Việt Nam tập trung quá nhiều vào việc tránh mọi lỗi ngữ pháp đến nỗi mất đi sự tự nhiên. Thực tế, band descriptors đánh giá cao “fluency” – khả năng giao tiếp trôi chảy, tự nhiên. Một vài lỗi grammar minor hoàn toàn acceptable nếu bạn vẫn communicate effectively.

  • Show genuine emotions khi nói (enthusiasm, thoughtfulness)
  • Allow yourself to pause naturally để think
  • Use discourse markers tự nhiên như “Well…”, “Let me think…”

3. Sophisticated Ideas Over Sophisticated Words

Đừng cố nhét những từ academic phức tạp mà bạn không comfortable. Better approach: express sophisticated ideas bằng language you can control confidently.

Ví dụ về Band 8-9 thinking:

  • Instead of: “The elderly are sagacious” (nếu bạn không tự nhiên với “sagacious”)
  • Say: “What strikes me about elderly people is their ability to see patterns in life that younger people miss. They’ve lived through similar situations multiple times, so they can offer perspectives we haven’t considered.”

Common Mistakes của Học Viên Việt Nam

1. Over-reliance on Templates

❌ “There are several reasons for this phenomenon. Firstly… Secondly… Last but not least…”

  • Nghe mechanical
  • Không natural conversation flow
  • Examiners recognize templates immediately

✅ Better approach: Use natural discourse markers

  • “Well, I think there are a few factors at play here…”
  • “One thing that comes to mind is…”
  • “Beyond that, we should also consider…”

2. Translating Directly from Vietnamese

❌ “Old people have many precious experiences” (direct translation)
✅ “Elderly people have accumulated invaluable life experience”

❌ “Young people should learn to respect old people”
✅ “Younger generations should cultivate respect for their elders”

3. Insufficient Development of Ideas

Nhiều học viên Việt Nam answer questions nhưng không develop ideas đủ sâu:

❌ Basic answer: “I think elderly people are important because they have experience and can teach young people.”

✅ Developed answer: “I believe elderly individuals play an irreplaceable role in society, particularly in transmitting cultural values and practical wisdom. For instance, my grandmother taught me traditional cooking methods that aren’t documented anywhere – knowledge that would be lost without intergenerational transfer. Beyond specific skills, elderly people offer perspective on what truly matters in life, helping younger generations avoid getting caught up in superficial concerns.”

4. Fear of Expressing Opinions

Học viên Việt Nam often play it safe, avoiding strong opinions. Nhưng Part 3 specifically tests your ability to discuss and defend viewpoints.

❌ “Some people think this, other people think that. It depends.”
✅ “I’d argue that… Of course, there are those who disagree, but from my perspective… because…”

Strategies for Each Part

Part 1 Strategy:

  • Aim for 2-3 sentences per answer
  • Add brief personal example or reason
  • Stay relaxed – đây là warm-up
  • Don’t overthink – answer naturally

Part 2 Strategy:

Examiners form initial impressions quickly. Start confidently:

  • Smile và maintain friendly demeanor
  • Answer warm-up questions naturally
  • Show you’re comfortable với English

2. Recovery from Mistakes

Don’t panic khi make mistakes. Natural self-correction is fine:

  • “I think elderly people plays… sorry, play an important role…”
  • “What I meant to say is…”

Nhưng đừng apologize excessively hoặc focus on errors.

3. Asking for Clarification

Hoàn toàn OK để ask:
