Q: “Would you describe yourself as optimistic or pessimistic?”
A (Band 6): “I think I am optimistic. I usually think positive things.”

Q: “Are you interested in art?”

→ Phân tích: Kết hợp cả “core qualities” và “at the heart of” trong một câu trả lời, thể hiện range vocabulary cao.
Speaking Part 2 – Long Turn
Cue Card: Describe a person who has influenced you
Sample Answer (Band 8-9):
“I’d like to talk about my uncle, who has been a significant influence in my life. Although he’s now a successful entrepreneur running a tech company, he’s an educator at heart.
What makes him special is that at the core of everything he does is a commitment to helping others learn and grow. When he started his business, he didn’t just focus on profits – instead, he created extensive training programs for employees because he believes the nature of business success lies in developing people’s potential.
By nature, my uncle is incredibly patient and curious. He’s the kind of person who can explain complex concepts in simple terms, which lies at the heart of effective teaching. Even now, despite his busy schedule, he volunteers to teach coding to underprivileged children every weekend.
What I admire most is how he’s remained true to his values. Many successful businesspeople become focused solely on money, but he’s fundamentally a teacher at heart, and that’s never changed. His example taught me that the core of a fulfilling career isn’t just financial success, but making a positive impact on others’ lives.
The nature of his influence on me has been profound. He showed me that you can blend different passions – in his case, technology and education – and create something meaningful. This has inspired me to pursue a career that combines my interests rather than choosing just one path.”
Phân tích Band 8-9 features:
- Sử dụng tự nhiên 6 lần các cụm từ (at heart: 2 lần, core: 2 lần, nature: 2 lần)
- Kết hợp trong các cấu trúc câu phức

- Vocabulary range cao (underprivileged, profound, blend passions)
- Coherence tốt với linking words
Speaking Part 3 – Discussion
Topic: Education System
Q: “What do you think is the most important aspect of education?”
A (Band 7-8): “That’s an interesting question. I believe at the core of effective education is the ability to develop critical thinking skills rather than just memorizing facts. The nature of learning has changed dramatically in the digital age – students now have access to unlimited information, so what matters most is teaching them how to analyze and evaluate that information. Fundamentally, education should be about empowering students to think independently, not just passing exams.”
→ Phân tích:
- Sử dụng ba cụm từ một cách tự nhiên
- Có thesis statement rõ ràng
- So sánh quá khứ/hiện tại
- Vocabulary academic (critically evaluate, empowering)
Q: “How has technology changed the way people work?”
A (Band 8-9): “Technology has fundamentally transformed the nature of work in several ways. Firstly, at the heart of this transformation is the shift from office-based to remote working, which has become especially prominent since the pandemic.
However, I think the core change isn’t just about location – it’s about the skills required. Traditional jobs often valued routine and consistency, but modern work demands creativity and adaptability by nature. For instance, many tasks that were once done manually are now automated, so workers need to focus on problem-solving and innovation instead.
Interestingly, while technology has made work more flexible, I believe human interaction remains at the core of successful collaboration. Video calls can’t completely replace face-to-face communication, especially when building trust and understanding the nature of complex problems.”
→ Phân tích:
- Extended answer với multiple points
- Sử dụng 5 cụm từ linh hoạt
- Có examples và personal insight
- Cohesive devices (Firstly, However, Interestingly)
- Complex sentence structures
Topic: Social Issues
Q: “Why do you think crime rates vary between countries?”
A (Band 8): “There are multiple factors, but at the core, I believe it comes down to socioeconomic conditions and cultural values. Countries with high inequality often experience more crime because by nature, people who feel marginalized may turn to illegal activities. Additionally, the nature of law enforcement differs significantly – some nations prioritize rehabilitation while others focus on punishment, which affects reoffending rates.”
→ Phân tích: Câu trả lời có depth, phân tích nguyên nhân sâu xa, sử dụng academic vocabulary.
Writing Task 2
Opinion Essay
Topic: Some people believe that competition in work, school and daily life is beneficial, while others argue that cooperation is more important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Body Paragraph 1 (Band 8):
“Advocates of competition argue that it drives progress and excellence. At the core of this perspective is the belief that when individuals compete, they push themselves to achieve higher standards and innovate more effectively. For instance, the competitive nature of the business world has led to remarkable technological advancements, as companies strive to outperform their rivals. Moreover, competition by nature encourages self-improvement and resilience, as people learn to cope with both success and failure. This is particularly evident in education, where students competing for scholarships often develop stronger work ethics and time management skills that benefit them throughout their lives.”
Phân tích:
- Topic sentence rõ ràng
- Sử dụng 3 cụm từ tự nhiên
- Có examples cụ thể
- Linking words (For instance, Moreover)
- Complex sentences with relative clauses
Body Paragraph 2 (Band 8):

At heart, humans are social creatures who thrive through collaboration, and history shows that major breakthroughs – from scientific discoveries to social movements – typically result from collective effort. Furthermore, the core principles of modern workplaces increasingly emphasize teamwork, as complex problems require diverse skills and perspectives. For example, developing a vaccine requires cooperation between researchers, healthcare professionals, and governments, something that would be impossible through competition alone. Fundamentally, while competition may motivate individuals, cooperation enables them to achieve what none could accomplish independently.”
Phân tích:
- Parallel structure với paragraph 1
- 4 cụm từ sử dụng đa dạng
- Historical và contemporary examples
- Academic vocabulary (breakthroughs, diverse perspectives)
Problem-Solution Essay
Topic: Many people today struggle to maintain work-life balance. What are the causes of this problem, and what solutions can you suggest?
Causes Paragraph (Band 8-9):
“The nature of modern employment has fundamentally changed, creating unprecedented challenges for work-life balance. At the core of this issue lies the digital revolution, which has blurred the boundaries between professional and personal time. Employees are now expected to remain accessible through emails and messaging apps even outside office hours, making it difficult to truly disconnect. Additionally, the competitive nature of the job market compels many workers to exceed normal expectations, fearing that showing any limitation might jeopardize their career progression. Another significant factor is that many companies prioritize productivity metrics over employee wellbeing, failing to recognize that at the heart of sustainable performance is a healthy, balanced workforce. The very nature of corporate culture in many industries glorifies overwork, with long hours perceived as a badge of dedication rather than a warning sign of poor management.”
Phân tích:
- Opening với general statement
- 5 cụm từ được integrate smoothly
- Multiple causes với explanations
- Cohesive devices (Additionally, Another significant factor)
- Cause-effect relationships rõ ràng
- Sophisticated vocabulary (unprecedented, jeopardize, glorifies)
Solutions Paragraph (Band 8):
“Addressing this problem requires changes at the core of workplace policies and cultural attitudes. Firstly, companies should implement ‘right to disconnect’ policies that legally prevent employers from contacting staff outside working hours, as France has successfully done. This acknowledges that by nature, people need time to recharge and that constant availability ultimately reduces productivity. Secondly, the nature of success in corporate environments needs redefining – organizations should measure output quality rather than hours worked, and promote leaders who exemplify healthy work habits. Finally, at heart, this is also an individual responsibility; workers must set clear boundaries and prioritize their wellbeing, understanding that core values like family and health should not be sacrificed for career advancement.”
Phân tích:
- Solutions parallel với causes
- Real-world example (France)
- Multiple solutions với justifications
- 5 cụm từ sử dụng naturally
- Balanced perspective (companies + individuals)
Discussion Essay
Topic: Some believe that success in life depends on hard work and determination, while others think factors like money and appearance are more important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Sample Body Paragraph (Band 9):
“Proponents of effort-based success maintain that dedication remains the fundamental pathway to achievement. At the core of this philosophy is the conviction that personal qualities like perseverance, discipline, and continuous learning can overcome almost any obstacle. Indeed, numerous self-made entrepreneurs who are, at heart, ordinary people have demonstrated that extraordinary results come from sustained effort rather than initial advantages. The nature of lasting success differs from temporary achievement precisely in this regard – those who rely solely on external factors like inherited wealth often struggle when circumstances change, whereas individuals with strong work ethics possess transferable skills applicable to any situation. Research in psychology supports this view, suggesting that by nature, humans derive greater satisfaction from accomplishments earned through effort, a phenomenon known as the ‘effort justification effect.’ Therefore, while external factors may provide temporary advantages, the core determinant of genuine, sustainable success remains personal dedication and resilience.”
Phân tích:
- Academic tone maintained throughout
- 5 cụm từ perfectly integrated
- Evidence-based argument (psychological research)
- Complex sentences with subordinate clauses
- Sophisticated vocabulary (perseverance, effort justification effect, transferable skills)
- Strong thesis with nuanced position

“He is a businessman at heart.”
hoặc
“At heart, he is a true artist.”
Giải thích:
- “At heart” thường đứng SAU danh từ: “be + (a/an) + noun + at heart”
- Nếu đặt đầu câu, phải có comma và có thêm adjective: “At heart, S + be + (a/an) + adjective + noun”
- Không quên mạo từ “a/an” trước danh từ đếm được số ít
Lưu ý:
- “At heart” không đứng sau động từ thường: ❌ “He works at heart” → ✅ “He is a worker at heart”
- “At heart” với adjective OK: “She is generous at heart” ✅

❌ SAI:
“The heart of the problem is lack of funding.”
(trong academic writing)
✅ ĐÚNG:
“The core of the problem is lack of funding.”
hoặc
“At the heart of the problem lies lack of funding.”
Giải thích:
- “The heart of” có thể dùng nhưng less formal, more metaphorical
- Trong IELTS Writing Task 2, “core” hoặc “at the heart of” (với full phrase) professional hơn
- “Heart” thường dùng với cảm xúc: “in my heart”, “heartfelt”
- “Core” dùng cho phân tích: “core issue”, “core reason”
Lưu ý:
- Speaking có thể dùng cả hai
- Writing Task 2 nên ưu tiên “core”
Lỗi 3: Dùng Sai Giới Từ Với “Nature”
❌ SAI:
“He is shy in nature.”
(muốn nói về tính cách bẩm sinh)
✅ ĐÚNG:
“He is shy by nature.”
Giải thích:
-
“By nature” = naturally, inherently (về bản chất, bẩm sinh)
- “Humans are social by nature.”
-
“In nature” = in the natural world, or “regarding its characteristics”
- “This chemical is found in nature.” (trong tự nhiên)
- “The problem is complex in nature.” (về mặt đặc tính)
Lưu ý:
- Personality, character → dùng “by nature”
- Characteristics, properties → dùng “in nature”
- Natural environment → dùng “in nature”
Lỗi 4: Thiếu Article Với “Core”
❌ SAI:
“At core of education is critical thinking.”
✅ ĐÚNG:
“At the core of education is critical thinking.”
Giải thích:
- “Core” là countable noun, cần article “the”
- Fixed phrase: “at the core of”
- Tương tự: “the nature of”, “the heart of”
Lưu ý:
- “Core values/beliefs/competencies” không cần article vì “core” là adjective: ✅ “Core values are important”
- Nhưng “the core of the problem” cần “the” vì “core” là noun: ✅
Lỗi 5: Dùng “Nature” Thay Cho “Character/Personality”
❌ SAI:
“My teacher has a kind nature and patient nature.”
✅ ĐÚNG:
“My teacher has a kind nature and patient character.”
hoặc tốt hơn:
“My teacher is kind and patient by nature.”
Giải thích:
- “Nature” có thể dùng cho personality nhưng không nên lặp lại
- Better alternatives:
- “Kind nature and patient character”
- “Kind and patient by nature”
- “Kind and patient personality”
- “Nature” thường dùng singular với personality context
Lưu ý:
- “Good nature” ✅ (common collocation)
- “Kind nature” ✅ (acceptable)
- Nhưng không lặp “nature” nhiều lần trong một câu
Lỗi 6: Dùng “At Heart” Cho Vật Thể/Ý Tưởng
❌ SAI:
“This book is at heart about love.”
✅ ĐÚNG:
“This book is essentially about love.”
hoặc
“At its core, this book is about love.”
Giải thích:
- “At heart” chủ yếu dùng cho NGƯỜI
- Cho sách, phim, ý tưởng → dùng “at its core”, “essentially”, “fundamentally”
Exception:
- “At heart” có thể dùng cho tổ chức được nhân cách hóa:
- “The company is, at heart, a family business.” ✅
Lỗi 7: Sai Thì Với “The Nature Of”
❌ SAI:
“The nature of work is changed significantly in recent years.”
✅ ĐÚNG:
“The nature of work has changed significantly in recent years.”
Giải thích:
- “In recent years” → Present Perfect (has/have + V3)
- “The nature of + noun” là subject singular → has (not have)
- Common mistake: dùng “is changed” (passive) thay vì “has changed” (active)
Lưu ý:
- “Nature” thường là subject active: “nature has changed/evolved/developed”
- Passive ít dùng: ❌ “nature is changed” → ✅ “nature has been transformed”
Top 5 Mistakes Summary (Tóm tắt lỗi thường gặp của học viên Việt):
- Quên article: “at core of” thay vì “at THE core of”
- Sai vị trí: “At heart, he is teacher” (thiếu mạo từ)
- Nhầm giới từ: “shy IN nature” thay vì “shy BY nature”
- Dùng for objects: “The book is at heart about…” (nên dùng “at its core”)
- Lặp từ: “kind nature and patient nature” (nên varied vocabulary)

Đáp Án Bài Tập 6:
Sample Body Paragraph (Band 8):
“Proponents of competition argue that it prepares children for real-world challenges. At the core of this perspective is the belief that competitive environments motivate students to excel and develop resilience when facing setbacks. For instance, academic contests encourage children to study harder and take pride in their achievements. Moreover, since by nature children seek recognition and rewards, competition can effectively harness this innate drive for positive educational outcomes. However, critics contend that excessive competition creates stress and undermines intrinsic motivation. They argue that cooperation better reflects the collaborative skills needed in modern workplaces, where teamwork is essential. At heart, I believe a balanced approach is optimal – competition can inspire individual excellence, while cooperation teaches equally important social skills. Educational systems should therefore integrate both elements, allowing children to experience healthy competition within a fundamentally supportive, collaborative environment.”
