IELTS Speaking Part 1: Introduction and Interview

  • Đưa ra 1-2 lý do cụ thể
  • Có thể so sánh ngắn gọn giữa hai lựa chọn

IELTS Speaking Part 2: Long Turn (Cue Card)

Cue Card

Describe a live sports match you have watched

You should say:

  • What the sport was
  • When and where you watched it
  • Who you watched it with
  • And explain how you felt about watching this live sports match

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7

Thời lượng: Khoảng 1 phút 50 giây

“I’d like to talk about a football match I watched last year. It was a match between Vietnam and Thailand in the AFF Championship. I watched it at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi.

I went there with my two best friends because we all love football. We bought tickets online one week before the match. The tickets were quite expensive but we were excited to go.

The stadium was very crowded with thousands of fans. Everyone wore red shirts and brought flags. The atmosphere was amazing. People were singing and cheering very loudly. When Vietnam scored a goal, everyone jumped and shouted. It was very exciting.

The match was intense and both teams played well. Vietnam won 2-1 in the end. I felt very happy and proud when we won. The players worked hard and the goalkeeper made some great saves.

After the match, we celebrated with other fans outside the stadium. We took many photos and sang songs together. It was a memorable experience because the atmosphere was incredible and I could share this moment with my friends. I felt connected to other Vietnamese fans and it made me love football even more. I hope I can watch another live match soon.”

“I’d like to share an unforgettable experience of watching a live football match that took place about a year ago. It was the highly anticipated semi-final between Vietnam and the Philippines in the AFF Championship, and I was lucky enough to secure tickets to watch it at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi.

I attended the match with my two closest friends, who are equally passionate about football. We had been looking forward to this match for weeks, especially since it was crucial for Vietnam’s chances of reaching the final. The build-up to the match had been intense, with both teams performing exceptionally well in the group stages.

The moment we entered the stadium, we were blown away by the electric atmosphere. The stands were packed to capacity with over 40,000 supporters, creating a sea of red – Vietnam’s national color. The deafening chants and the rhythmic drumming from the fans created an absolutely spine-tingling ambiance.

The match itself was nail-biting from start to finish. Both teams displayed impressive skills and tactical awareness. The tension was palpable every time a player approached the goal. When Vietnam scored the decisive goal in the second half, the entire stadium erupted into jubilation. I found myself swept up in the collective euphoria, jumping and embracing strangers around me.

What made this experience particularly meaningful was the sense of national unity I felt. Despite coming from different backgrounds, everyone was united by their support for the national team. The camaraderie among fans, the raw emotion displayed when we won, and sharing this historic moment with thousands of fellow Vietnamese created a profound sense of belonging. It wasn’t just about the sport – it was about being part of something bigger, a collective celebration of national pride.”

📝 Sample Answer – Band 8.5-9

Thời lượng: 2 phút 45 giây đầy đủ

“I’d like to recount what was arguably one of the most exhilarating sporting experiences of my life – attending the AFF Championship semi-final between Vietnam and the Philippines at My Dinh Stadium approximately a year ago. This wasn’t just any ordinary match; it was a make-or-break encounter that would determine whether Vietnam would advance to the final, so the stakes couldn’t have been higher.

I had the pleasure of attending with two of my closest friends, both of whom are die-hard football enthusiasts. We’d been counting down the days to this match, and I must admit, securing tickets was quite an ordeal – they sold out within hours of being released. But the hassle was well worth it, as this turned out to be an experience that would be etched in my memory forever.

From the moment we set foot in the stadium precinct, we could sense the palpable excitement in the air. The approach to the venue was thronging with supporters draped in red, the collective anticipation building with every step. Once inside, the sight was absolutely breathtaking – imagine a colossal bowl of humanity, 40,000 strong, all unified in their passion for the national team. The cacophony of chants, the orchestrated waves of movement from the crowd, and the visual spectacle of flags and banners created an atmosphere that can only be described as utterly mesmerizing.

The match itself was nothing short of spectacular. What struck me most was the ebb and flow of momentum – one moment Thailand seemed to have the upper hand, the next Vietnam would mount a threatening counter-attack. The tactical chess match between the two coaches was fascinating to observe. Every crunching tackle, every near-miss, every moment of individual brilliance from the players had the crowd on the edge of their seats. When Quang Hai unleashed that magnificent strike that proved to be the winner, the stadium went absolutely berserk. I’ve never experienced such unbridled joy – complete strangers were locked in embraces, tears were streaming down faces, and the roar that emanated from the crowd was almost primal in its intensity.

But what truly elevated this from merely an exciting match to a profoundly meaningful experience was the deeper emotional resonance it created. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming connection not just to the 40,000 people around me, but to millions of Vietnamese watching across the country and abroad. It was a visceral reminder of the unifying power of sport – how it can transcend socioeconomic boundaries and bring people together in shared celebration. The experience gave me a renewed appreciation for what it means to be part of a national community. Even now, when I reflect on that evening, I’m reminded that some of life’s most treasured moments come from these collective experiences where we feel part of something much larger than ourselves.”

Sử dụng discourse markers tinh tế như “I must admit”, “But what truly elevated this”, “Even now, when I reflect” để guide listener through different stages của narrative.

📚 Vocabulary Tinh Vi:

  • “make-or-break encounter” thay vì “important match” – shows sophisticated understanding
  • “ebb and flow of momentum” – metaphorical language demonstrating advanced expression
  • “visceral reminder” – abstract vocabulary showing ability to discuss emotions at deep level
  • “transcend socioeconomic boundaries” – academic vocabulary used naturally in spoken context

📝 Grammar Đa Dạng:

  • “From the moment we set foot in the stadium precinct, we could sense…” – complex sentence với time clause
  • “imagine a colossal bowl of humanity, 40,000 strong, all unified in their passion” – appositive phrases và participial modifiers
  • “When Quang Hai unleashed that magnificent strike that proved to be the winner…” – nested relative clauses
  • Inversion: “Never have I experienced such unbridled joy” (được paraphrase thành I’ve never experienced)

💡 Ideas Sâu Sắc:
Không chỉ mô tả sự kiện mà còn reflects on deeper meaning: “transcend socioeconomic boundaries”, “unifying power of sport”, “collective experiences where we feel part of something much larger than ourselves”. Điều này shows critical thinking và ability to abstract from concrete experience.

Follow-up Questions (Rounding Off Questions)

Question 1: Do you often watch live sports matches?

Band 6-7 Answer:
“No, not really. It’s quite expensive to buy tickets and the stadium is far from my home. I usually watch sports on TV instead.”

Band 8-9 Answer:
“Not as often as I’d like, to be honest. While I’d love to make it a regular occurrence, the logistical challenges and financial implications mean it’s more of an occasional treat for me. That said, when I do get the opportunity, I always jump at the chance.”

💡 Key differences: Band 8-9 sử dụng tentative language (to be honest), sophisticated vocabulary (logistical challenges, financial implications), idiomatic expressions (jump at the chance), và hedging language (not as often as I’d like).

Question 2: Was the atmosphere in the stadium different from watching on TV?

Band 6-7 Answer:
“Yes, very different. The atmosphere was much more exciting in the stadium. I could feel the energy from other fans and it was more fun.”

Band 8-9 Answer:
“Absolutely, it’s like chalk and cheese. While TV offers certain conveniences and better visual angles, being there in person gives you an irreplaceable sense of immediacy and collective energy that simply can’t be replicated through a screen. You become part of the experience rather than just a passive observer.”

💡 Key differences: Idiomatic expression (chalk and cheese), acknowledges complexity (While TV offers…), sophisticated vocabulary (irreplaceable, collective energy, can’t be replicated), abstract concepts (passive observer vs part of the experience).

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Two-way Discussion

  • Sử dụng discourse markers để organize ideas (Well, Actually, On the one hand…)
  • Sử dụng tentative language (I would say, It seems to me, To some extent…)

Lỗi thường gặp của học viên Việt Nam:

  • Trả lời quá ngắn như Part 1 (1-2 câu)
  • Không phân tích sâu, chỉ nêu opinion đơn giản
  • Thiếu examples để support ideas
  • Không có reasoning hoặc justification
  • Thiếu từ vựng abstract và academic
  • Không demonstrate critical thinking

Các Câu Hỏi Thảo Luận Sâu

Theme 1: Social Impact of Sports

Question 1: Why do you think sports events are so popular around the world?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Reasons/Explanation question
  • Key words: why, popular, around the world

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“I think sports events are popular because they are entertaining and exciting. People enjoy watching skilled athletes compete. Also, sports bring communities together and give people something to talk about. In my country, when there’s a big football match, everyone watches it and discusses it afterwards.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Basic structure với 2 main reasons
  • Vocabulary: Common words (entertaining, exciting, skilled)
  • Tại sao Band 6-7: Answers the question adequately nhưng lacks depth, limited vocabulary range, simple grammar structures

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

“Well, I think the universal appeal of sports stems from several interconnected factors. Firstly, there’s the innate human fascination with competition and excellence – watching athletes push the boundaries of human capability is genuinely awe-inspiring. Beyond the entertainment value, sports events serve as powerful social catalysts that transcend cultural and linguistic barriers. They provide a shared narrative that entire communities can rally around, creating a sense of collective identity.

Take the Olympics, for instance – it’s not just about the medals; it’s about national pride and global unity. There’s also a psychological dimension to consider – sports offer a form of vicarious achievement where spectators can project their aspirations onto athletes. In our increasingly fragmented digital age, live sports events represent one of the few remaining genuinely communal experiences where people from diverse backgrounds come together in real-time to share in the emotional rollercoaster of competition.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Well-organized với clear progression: Direct answer → Multiple reasons elaborated → Specific example → Deeper psychological analysis → Modern context
  • Vocabulary: Sophisticated và precise (universal appeal, innate fascination, social catalysts, transcend barriers, vicarious achievement, fragmented digital age)
  • Grammar: Complex structures with multiple subordinate clauses, relative clauses, participle phrases
  • Critical Thinking: Shows multi-dimensional analysis (entertainment, social, psychological), acknowledges modern context, uses concrete example (Olympics)

💡 Key Language Features:

  • Discourse markers: Well, Firstly, Beyond, Take…for instance, There’s also
  • Tentative language: I think, genuinely, represent one of the few
  • Abstract nouns: appeal, fascination, excellence, narrative, identity, dimension, achievement, aspirations
  • Hedging: increasingly, genuinely, one of the few

Question 2: Do you think watching sports can bring benefits to society?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Opinion + Benefits/Advantages question
  • Key words: benefits, society
  • Cách tiếp cận: State opinion clearly → Discuss multiple societal benefits → Provide examples → Có thể acknowledge limitations

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“Yes, I believe watching sports is good for society. It helps people feel connected to each other and promotes physical activity. When people watch sports, they might be inspired to play sports themselves, which is healthy. Sports also teach important values like teamwork and fair play.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Direct answer với several benefits listed
  • Vocabulary: Basic (good, connected, healthy, important values)
  • Tại sao Band 6-7: Clear communication nhưng lacks sophistication, benefits not deeply explored

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

“Absolutely, though I’d argue the benefits extend far beyond what’s immediately apparent. On the most tangible level, watching sports can inspire behavioral change – seeing elite athletes can motivate ordinary people to embrace more active lifestyles, which has obvious public health implications in an era of rising obesity rates.

But perhaps more significantly, sports function as a kind of social glue in increasingly polarized societies. During major sporting events, you see people from vastly different socioeconomic backgrounds coming together in shared celebration or commiseration. This sense of unity, however temporary or superficial it might be, is valuable in fostering social cohesion.

There’s also an economic dimension that shouldn’t be overlooked – major sporting events can catalyze infrastructure development, boost tourism, and generate substantial employment. Look at how cities vie to host events like the Olympics or World Cup.

That said, we should be mindful of the potential drawbacks – excessive focus on sports can sometimes divert resources from other important areas like education, and there’s a risk of fostering unhealthy nationalism rather than healthy patriotism. So while the benefits are considerable, they need to be balanced against these concerns.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Sophisticated với multiple layers: Direct answer → Physical benefits → Social benefits → Economic benefits → Balanced view với potential drawbacks → Conclusion
  • Vocabulary: Academic và precise (tangible, inspire behavioral change, public health implications, social glue, polarized societies, foster cohesion, catalyze development, vie to host, divert resources)
  • Grammar: Full range including: conditionals (can inspire, can catalyze), though-clauses, passive voice (shouldn’t be overlooked, need to be balanced)
  • Critical Thinking: Multi-dimensional analysis (health, social, economic), provides specific examples, acknowledges complexity với drawbacks, shows balanced perspective

💡 Key Language Features:

  • Qualifying language: Absolutely, though I’d argue, perhaps more significantly, however temporary, that said
  • Abstract vocabulary: tangible level, public health implications, social cohesion, economic dimension, unhealthy nationalism
  • Contrast structures: But perhaps more significantly…, That said…, while the benefits are considerable
  • Examples: rising obesity rates, Olympics, World Cup

Theme 2: Sports and Technology

Question 3: How has technology changed the way people watch sports?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Change/Comparison question (past vs present)
  • Key words: technology, changed, way people watch
  • Cách tiếp cận: Discuss changes chronologically hoặc by categories, use comparison language, give specific examples

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“Technology has changed sports watching a lot. Now people can watch sports on their phones and computers, not just on TV. They can also watch replays and highlights anytime they want. Social media lets fans discuss games with others. These changes make it more convenient for people to follow sports.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Lists changes sequentially
  • Vocabulary: Basic (a lot, convenient, anytime)

“The technological revolution has fundamentally transformed the sports viewing landscape in ways that would have been unimaginable just a generation ago. The most obvious shift is the democratization of access – we’ve moved from a world where you were tethered to your television at a specific time, to one where you can stream matches on-demand from virtually any device. This has shattered geographical barriers; a Vietnamese fan can now watch Premier League matches in real-time with the same ease as someone in London.

But it goes much deeper than mere accessibility. Technology has revolutionized the viewing experience itself. Features like multi-angle replays, augmented reality graphics that display real-time statistics, and ultra-high-definition broadcasting have made the at-home experience almost rival the stadium atmosphere in terms of visual quality. Some would argue it’s even superior – you get the benefit of expert commentary, instant analysis, and close-up perspectives that you simply can’t get from a stadium seat.

Moreover, social media has fundamentally altered the communal aspect of sports watching. It’s created virtual stadiums where millions of people can engage in real-time discourse during matches, share reactions, and participate in global conversations. This has paradoxically made sports watching both more individualized – you choose when and how to watch – and more communal – you’re connected to a global community of fans.

However, there’s an argument to be made that something has been lost in translation. The curated, mediated experience we get through screens, while convenient, might lack the raw authenticity and visceral impact of live attendance. So while technology has undoubtedly enhanced accessibility and convenience, it’s worth questioning whether it’s truly captured the essence of what makes sports compelling.”

Question 4: Do you think virtual reality will replace attending live sports events in the future?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Future prediction/Speculation + Opinion
  • Key words: virtual reality, replace, future
  • Cách tiếp cận: State position → Analyze VR advantages → Discuss irreplaceable aspects của live events → Make nuanced prediction

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“I don’t think virtual reality will completely replace live sports events. Although VR technology is getting better, many people still prefer the real experience of being in a stadium. The atmosphere and feeling of being with other fans cannot be replaced by technology. However, VR might become popular for people who cannot attend in person.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Clear position với basic reasoning
  • Vocabulary: Simple (getting better, real experience, cannot be replaced)

“I’d say it’s highly unlikely that VR will completely supplant live attendance, though it will certainly carve out a significant niche. Let me explain why I’m skeptical about full replacement.

VR technology is advancing at a remarkable pace, and I can envision a future where it offers an incredibly immersive experience – imagine donning a headset and being virtually transported to a courtside seat at an NBA game or the front row of a Champions League final. The technological potential is genuinely staggering, and for people facing geographical constraints or mobility issues, this could be transformative.

However, there are certain intrinsic elements of live sports attendance that I believe are fundamentally irreplicable. Sports events are not just about visual and auditory input – they engage all your senses. There’s the collective body heat of thousands of people, the smell of stadium food, the physical vibration you feel when the crowd erupts, the spontaneous interactions with fellow fans. These multisensory experiences create emotional resonance that transcends what current – or even foreseeable – technology can deliver.

More philosophically, attending live sports is about physical co-presence – being literally in the same space as thousands of others sharing the same moment. This has a quasi-ritualistic quality that VR, by its very nature, atomizes rather than amplifies. You’re still ultimately isolated in your individual experience, even if you’re technically connected to others online.

That said, I could see VR becoming an increasingly popular complement rather than a replacement – offering enhanced experiences for those who can’t make it to the stadium, or providing alternative viewing angles for those at home. It might even become the primary mode for some niche sports with limited live attendance capacity. But for major sporting events, I think the allure of physical attendance will endure precisely because it offers something fundamentally different from – not just technically inferior to – the mediated experience.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Highly sophisticated với clear argumentation: Position statement → VR advantages acknowledged → Irreplaceable elements analyzed → Philosophical dimension → Nuanced prediction
  • Vocabulary: Academic và precise (supplant, carve out a niche, intrinsic elements, irreplicable, multisensory, quasi-ritualistic, atomizes, allure)
  • Grammar: Full range including: conditionals (will certainly carve, could see), imagine + -ing, passive voice, complex noun phrases
  • Critical Thinking: Multi-layered analysis (technological, sensory, philosophical), acknowledges both sides, makes nuanced prediction rather than absolute statement

  • Qualifying expressions: Let me explain why, However, More philosophically, precisely because
  • Abstract concepts: intrinsic elements, emotional resonance, physical co-presence, quasi-ritualistic quality

Theme 3: Sports and National Identity

Question 5: Why do people feel so strongly about their national sports teams?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Explanation/Psychology question
  • Key words: why, feel strongly, national teams
  • Cách tiếp cận: Analyze psychological và sociological reasons, discuss concepts như identity, belonging, pride

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“People feel strongly about national teams because these teams represent their country. When the team wins, people feel proud of their nation. Sports give people a sense of belonging and unity. It’s also about tradition – people have supported these teams for many years, sometimes since childhood.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Several reasons provided
  • Vocabulary: Common expressions (feel proud, sense of belonging, tradition)

“This is a fascinating question that touches on fundamental aspects of human psychology and social identity. I think the emotional investment people have in national teams stems from several interwoven factors.

At the most basic level, national teams serve as tangible embodiments of abstract concepts like national identity. In everyday life, ‘being Vietnamese’ or ‘being Brazilian’ is rather amorphous – it’s hard to pin down exactly what it means. But when your national team takes to the field, suddenly there’s this concrete representation of national character that you can rally behind. It transforms an abstract identity into something visceral and immediate.

There’s also a psychological phenomenon called reflected glory – people bask in the success of groups they’re associated with, even if they’ve contributed nothing to that success. When Vietnam’s football team wins, fans experience a boost to their self-esteem as if they’d somehow participated in the victory. This is particularly powerful for people who might feel marginalized or powerless in other aspects of life – sports offer them a avenue for vicarious achievement and collective celebration.

Moreover, in an increasingly globalized and individualized world, supporting a national team provides a sense of belonging to something larger than oneself. It’s one of the few remaining contexts where overt displays of nationalism are not just tolerated but encouraged. The stadium becomes a space where people can shed their individual identities and merge into a collective without social judgment.

There’s also evolutionary psychology to consider – humans are inherently tribal, and sports provide a socially acceptable outlet for these primal instincts toward in-group favoritism and competitive triumph over others. The passion isn’t really about the sport itself – it’s about group identity and the fundamental human need to belong to a winning tribe.

That said, when this passion crosses the line into aggressive nationalism or hostility toward opposing fans, it reveals the darker side of these tribal instincts. So while the emotional attachment is understandable and largely positive, it’s worth being mindful of when it morphs into something less healthy.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Highly sophisticated với thematic organization: Introduction → Concrete representation → Psychological phenomenon → Belonging need → Evolutionary perspective → Critical reflection
  • Vocabulary: Academic và psychological terminology (interwoven factors, tangible embodiments, amorphous, reflected glory, vicarious achievement, evolutionary psychology, tribal instincts, in-group favoritism)
  • Grammar: Full range with complex noun phrases, relative clauses, conditional structures, participle clauses
  • Critical Thinking: Multi-disciplinary analysis (psychology, sociology, evolution), acknowledges both positive and negative aspects, uses technical concepts accurately

  • Psychology vocabulary: emotional investment, psychological phenomenon, self-esteem, collective celebration, primal instincts
  • Hedging: I think, rather, might feel, largely positive, it’s worth being mindful

Question 6: Should governments invest more money in sports facilities and events?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Should question (Policy/Opinion)
  • Key words: governments, invest, money, sports facilities and events
  • Cách tiếp cận: Present balanced argument với both sides, consider opportunity costs, give nuanced position

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“I think governments should invest in sports, but they also need to spend money on other important things like education and healthcare. Sports facilities are important for public health and they can attract tourists. However, the government must balance spending and not ignore other priorities. Each country should decide based on their specific needs.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Balanced view với both sides mentioned
  • Vocabulary: Basic (important, attract tourists, balance spending)
  • Tại sao Band 6-7: Shows awareness của complexity nhưng analysis not deep, vocabulary limited

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

“This is a contentious issue that requires careful consideration of competing priorities and opportunity costs. My position is that it depends entirely on a country’s stage of development and existing infrastructure.

For developing nations facing pressing challenges like inadequate healthcare systems, educational deficits, or poverty alleviation, lavish spending on sports facilities would be difficult to justify. The marginal benefit of a new stadium pales in comparison to the impact of investing in basic services. We’ve seen cautionary tales like Brazil’s World Cup preparations, where billions were funneled into stadiums while basic infrastructure crumbled – this represents a fundamental misallocation of resources.

However, I wouldn’t advocate for complete neglect of sports infrastructure. Even in developing countries, moderate investment in community-level sports facilities can yield significant returns. These facilities promote public health, reduce healthcare costs downstream, provide safe recreational spaces for youth, and can foster community cohesion. The key is proportionalitygrassroots facilities that serve local communities rather than vanity projects aimed at international prestige.

For developed nations with robust social safety nets already in place, the equation changes. Here, investment in world-class sports facilities can be economically justified through tourism revenue, job creation, and soft power projection. Singapore’s Sports Hub or London’s Olympic Park demonstrate how such investments can catalyze urban regeneration and become long-term assets rather than white elephants.

Ultimately, I’d argue that sports investment should pass a rigorous cost-benefit analysis that considers not just direct economic returns but also social dividends like health outcomes and community wellbeing. Governments should prioritize sustainable, multipurpose facilities that continue serving communities long after headline events have passed, rather than single-use stadiums that become financial burdens. The question isn’t whether to invest, but how to invest wisely and proportionally given a country’s unique circumstances and constraints.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Highly sophisticated với nuanced argumentation: Context-dependency established → Developing nations argument → Moderate approach → Developed nations argument → Principled conclusion
  • Vocabulary: Policy-related và economic terminology (contentious issue, opportunity costs, marginal benefit, misallocation of resources, proportionality, vanity projects, soft power projection, white elephants, cost-benefit analysis)
  • Grammar: Full range with conditionals, passive constructions, relative clauses, parallel structures
  • Critical Thinking: Considers multiple contexts (developing vs developed), acknowledges complexity, uses specific examples (Brazil, Singapore), provides principled framework rather than absolute position

💡 Key Language Features:

  • Policy discourse: This is a contentious issue, requires careful consideration, I wouldn’t advocate for, Ultimately I’d argue
  • Economic vocabulary: opportunity costs, marginal benefit, yield significant returns, economically justified, financial burdens
  • Qualifying language: depends entirely on, would be difficult to justify, can be justified, should pass
