IELTS Speaking: Cách Trả Lời “Describe A Person Who Has A Very Creative Hobby” – Bài Mẫu Band 6-9

Mở bài

Chủ đề “Describe A Person Who Has A Very Creative Hobby” là một đề bài Speaking Part 2 vô cùng phổ biến trong các kỳ thi IELTS hiện nay.

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Introduction and Interview

  • Trả lời quá ngắn kiểu “Yes, I do” rồi im lặng chờ câu hỏi tiếp theo
  • Dùng từ vựng quá đơn giản như “good, bad, like, don’t like” lặp đi lặp lại

Cần more sophisticated vocabulary và complex sentences.

📝 Sample Answer – Band 8-9:

Well, I’d say content creation has become incredibly popular among younger generations. Activities like vlogging, digital illustration, and photo editing are particularly widespread since they combine creativity with technology, which resonates with tech-savvy young people. Additionally, there’s been a resurgence of traditional crafts like embroidery and pottery, partly due to social media platforms like Instagram where people can showcase their handmade creations. What’s interesting is that many of these hobbies also have an entrepreneurial aspect – young people can potentially monetize their creative work online.

Phân tích:

Cue Card

Describe a person who has a very creative hobby

You should say:

  • Who this person is
  • What their hobby is
  • How you know about this person and their hobby
  • And explain why you think this hobby is creative

  1. Who this person is: Cần nói rõ relationship (bạn bè, người thân, đồng nghiệp) và có thể thêm vài detail về appearance/personality
  2. What their hobby is: Miêu tả cụ thể hoạt động sáng tạo, không nói chung chung
  3. How you know about this person and their hobby: Kể câu chuyện về lần đầu gặp/biết về hobby
  4. Explain why creative: Đây là phần quan trọng nhất để ghi điểm – phải phân tích, không chỉ nói “vì nó sáng tạo”

Câu “explain” quan trọng: Câu explain luôn là phần ghi điểm cao nhất trong Part 2. Bạn cần demonstrate critical thinking bằng cách phân tích, đưa ra lý do cụ thể, có thể so sánh với các hoạt động khác. Dành 30-40 giây cuối cho phần này.

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7

Thời lượng: Khoảng 1.5-2 phút

I’d like to talk about my cousin, Minh, who has a very creative hobby. He is 25 years old and works as a software engineer, but in his free time, he enjoys making miniature models of famous buildings.

His hobby is creating small models of buildings like the Eiffel Tower or Vietnamese temples. He uses different materials like wood, plastic, and sometimes even paper. He makes everything by hand and pays attention to very small details. Each model takes him several weeks or even months to finish.

I found out about his hobby about two years ago when I visited his house. He showed me his room which was full of these models. I was very surprised because I didn’t know he had this hobby before. He explained to me how he makes them and showed me the tools he uses. Since then, I often ask him about his new projects.

I think this hobby is very creative because it needs imagination and artistic skills. He has to look at pictures of real buildings and then make small versions of them. He also sometimes changes the design to make it more interesting. It’s not easy to work with small pieces and make everything look real. I think not many people can do this kind of hobby because it requires patience and creativity. That’s why I really admire what he does.

📝 Sample Answer – Band 7.5-8

Thời lượng: Khoảng 2-2.5 phút

I’d like to talk about my neighbor, Mrs. Lan, who has an incredibly creative hobby that never fails to captivate me. She’s a retired teacher in her early sixties, and despite her age, she’s one of the most artistically talented people I’ve ever encountered.

Her hobby is upcycling old furniture and household items into beautiful, functional pieces with completely new purposes. For instance, she once transformed an outdated wooden ladder into a stunning bookshelf, and another time she converted old window frames into decorative mirrors with intricate designs. What makes her work particularly special is that she doesn’t just repaint things – she completely reimagines their function and aesthetic.

I first discovered her hobby about three years ago when I was walking past her front yard and noticed some peculiar-looking furniture drying in the sun. Curious, I struck up a conversation with her, and she enthusiastically showed me her workshop in the garage. Since then, I’ve become a regular visitor, and I’m always amazed by her latest creations. She’s even taught me some basic techniques, though I have to admit I’m nowhere near as skilled as she is.

I consider this hobby extremely creative for several reasons. Firstly, it requires exceptional vision – the ability to look at something worn-out and envision its potential as something entirely different. Secondly, it demands both technical skills and artistic flair, as she needs to strip down, repair, and rebuild items while maintaining an aesthetic sensibility. Moreover, what I find most impressive is the environmental consciousness behind her hobby. She’s essentially giving new life to items that would otherwise end up in landfills, which adds a meaningful dimension to her creativity. It’s this combination of artistry, craftsmanship, and sustainability that makes her hobby truly remarkable in my eyes.

📝 Sample Answer – Band 8.5-9

Thời lượng: 2.5-3 phút đầy đủ

I’d like to tell you about my former colleague, David, whose hobby I find absolutely mesmerizing. He’s a mild-mannered accountant in his mid-thirties, and you’d never guess from his rather unassuming demeanor that he possesses such an extraordinary creative talent.

David’s passion lies in creating elaborate kinetic sculptures – essentially three-dimensional artworks that incorporate movement, often powered by simple mechanisms like wind or hand-cranked gears. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill decorative pieces; they’re intricate mechanical marvels that blur the line between art and engineering. One piece that particularly struck me was a sculpture depicting a flock of birds, where each bird moved independently in a fluid, lifelike manner when you turned a small handle. The level of detail was simply breathtaking – each feather seemed to catch the light differently, and the synchronized yet organic movement created an almost hypnotic effect.

I first became aware of David’s hobby quite by chance during a company social gathering about four years ago. We were making small talk when he casually mentioned that he’d be exhibiting at a local art fair that weekend. Intrigued, I decided to attend, and I was absolutely blown away by what I saw. His work was in a league of its own compared to other exhibits. Since that day, I’ve made a point of visiting his studio whenever he has new pieces, and I’ve even commissioned a small sculpture as a gift for my father, who’s an engineer and absolutely treasures it.

What makes this hobby profoundly creative, in my view, is the multifaceted nature of the skills it demands. Firstly, there’s the conceptual creativity – David has to envision pieces that are not only visually appealing but also mechanically feasible. This requires an unusual blend of artistic vision and technical prowess. Secondly, the execution demands extraordinary precision and problem-solving abilities. When I watched him work, I noticed he’d often encounter unexpected challenges – a gear that wouldn’t turn smoothly or a balance issue – and he’d have to improvise solutions on the spot, which to me epitomizes the creative process.

Furthermore, what truly sets his work apart is the narrative element he weaves into each piece. He once explained that every sculpture tells a story or captures a fleeting moment – that flock of birds, for instance, was inspired by a childhood memory of watching birds migrate. This infusion of personal meaning and emotional resonance elevates his work from mere craftsmanship to genuine art. Finally, there’s something deeply creative about breathing life into inanimate materials – watching cold metal and wood transform into something that evokes wonder and seems almost alive is truly remarkable. It’s this alchemy of technical skill, artistic vision, personal expression, and sheer imagination that makes David’s hobby one of the most creative endeavors I’ve ever witnessed.

📚 Vocabulary Tinh Vi:
Ví dụ: “blur the line between art and engineering” – đây là một metaphor tinh tế thể hiện level cao của vocabulary.

Ví dụ: “breathing life into inanimate materials” – personification này elevates language lên level văn chương, showing ability để use figurative language naturally.

📝 Grammar Đa Dạng:
Ví dụ: “What makes this hobby profoundly creative, in my view, is the multifaceted nature of the skills it demands.”

Ví dụ: “When I watched him work, I noticed he’d often encounter unexpected challenges – a gear that wouldn’t turn smoothly or a balance issue – and he’d have to improvise solutions on the spot” – câu này demonstrate ability để embed multiple clauses và use dashes để add extra information naturally.

Follow-up Questions (Rounding Off Questions)

Question 1: Is this a popular hobby in your country?

Band 6-7 Answer:
No, not really. This kind of hobby is quite rare in Vietnam. Most people prefer simpler hobbies like watching movies or playing sports.

Band 8-9 Answer:
I’d say it’s quite niche, actually. While Vietnam has a growing community of craft enthusiasts and makers, kinetic sculpture specifically remains relatively obscure. Most people gravitate toward more accessible creative outlets like painting or photography, though I have noticed an emerging interest in artisanal crafts thanks to social media exposure.

Question 2: Would you like to try this hobby yourself?

Band 6-7 Answer:
Yes, I think it would be interesting to try. But I think it’s very difficult and needs a lot of time. Maybe I will try something easier first.

Band 8-9 Answer:
I’m certainly tempted, though I’m also somewhat daunted by the technical complexity involved. I think I’d probably start with something more manageable – perhaps basic woodworking or simple mechanical projects – to build up the foundational skills before tackling something as ambitious as kinetic sculpture. That said, David has offered to give me some introductory lessons, which I’m definitely keen to take him up on.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Two-way Discussion

  • Sử dụng discourse markers để structure ideas (Well, Actually, On the one hand…)
  • Thừa nhận complexity của vấn đề khi appropriate (It depends, To some extent…)

Theme 1: Creativity and Society

Question 1: Why do you think creativity is important in modern society?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Opinion + Explanation (Why…)
  • Key words: creativity, important, modern society

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

I think creativity is very important in modern society for many reasons. First, it helps people solve problems in new ways. For example, many companies need creative workers to develop new products. Also, creativity makes life more interesting because we have new music, art, and entertainment. In education, creative thinking helps students learn better. So overall, creativity is necessary for progress and development.

Well, I’d argue that creativity has become indispensable in modern society for several compelling reasons. Firstly, we’re living in an era of unprecedented change and complexity, where traditional solutions often prove inadequate. Creative thinking enables us to tackle novel challenges – whether that’s developing sustainable technologies to address climate change or reimagining work structures in the post-pandemic world.

Beyond problem-solving, creativity is also intrinsically linked to economic prosperity. The most thriving economies today are those that have successfully cultivated what economists call the “creative economy” – sectors like design, technology innovation, and content creation that add value through original ideas rather than just manufacturing or resource extraction. Countries like South Korea and Singapore have strategically invested in creative industries and reaped substantial benefits.

Moreover, I think there’s a profound psychological dimension to this. In an increasingly automated world where routine tasks are being taken over by AI and machines, distinctively human capabilities like creativity, emotional intelligence, and innovative thinking become our most valuable assets. They’re what will set us apart in the job market and give our work meaning beyond mere survival. Finally, creativity also enriches our collective cultural life – it’s through creative expression that societies process experiences, challenge norms, and evolve their values. So it’s not just economically important; it’s fundamental to what makes us human.

  • Vocabulary: Sophisticated và precise (indispensable, unprecedented, intrinsically linked to, cultivated, reaped substantial benefits). Strong collocations throughout.
  • Grammar: Wide range với complex structures: relative clauses, participle phrases, cleft sentences. Mix của tenses appropriate.
  • Critical Thinking: Multi-dimensional analysis covering economic, psychological, social, và philosophical aspects. Shows awareness của current trends (AI, pandemic). References đến specific examples (South Korea, Singapore) demonstrates broader knowledge.

💡 Key Language Features:

  • Discourse markers: Well, Firstly, Beyond, Moreover, Finally – guide listener through complex argument
  • Tentative language: I’d argue, I think – appropriate hedging cho opinion
  • Abstract nouns: prosperity, dimension, capabilities, expression, evolution – essential cho Part 3
  • Causative language: enables us to, allows us to, leads to – show relationships between ideas

Question 2: Do you think schools should encourage creative activities more?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Opinion + Should question (về education policy)
  • Key words: schools, encourage, creative activities
  • Cách tiếp cận: Yes/No position → Reasons why → Potential challenges → Balanced conclusion

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

Yes, I believe schools should encourage more creative activities. Many schools now focus too much on exams and grades, so students don’t have time for creative subjects like art or music. Creative activities can help students develop different skills like imagination and teamwork. However, it might be difficult because schools have limited budgets and need to cover many subjects. But I still think creativity is important for children’s development.

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Has position statement và some supporting reasons. Acknowledges challenges nhưng briefly.
  • Vocabulary: Basic educational vocabulary (exams, grades, subjects, budgets)
Ideas could be more thoroughly developed với specific examples.

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

Absolutely, I’m a strong advocate for integrating more creative activities into the curriculum, though I think we need to be strategic about how we do this. The current educational paradigm in many countries, including Vietnam, tends to prioritize standardized testing and rote memorization, which, while important for building foundational knowledge, often comes at the expense of developing creative and critical thinking skills.

There’s actually substantial research suggesting that engagement in creative activities – whether that’s visual arts, music, drama, or even creative problem-solving in STEM subjects – correlates with improved performance across the board. These activities foster cognitive flexibility, emotional intelligence, and collaborative skills that are increasingly recognized as essential for success in the 21st-century workforce. Moreover, for students who may struggle with traditional academic subjects, creative outlets can provide alternative pathways to engagement and achievement, potentially reducing dropout rates and boosting overall student well-being.

That said, I think the challenge lies in implementation. Simply tacking on an extra art class won’t suffice if it’s seen as peripheral to the “real” curriculum. What’s needed is a more holistic approach that weaves creativity throughout the educational experience – encouraging creative approaches to problem-solving in math, incorporating design thinking into science projects, or using drama to bring history alive. Finland’s education system provides an interesting model here, where cross-disciplinaryphenomenon-based learning” integrates creative thinking across subjects.

Of course, this requires substantial investment in teacher training and resources, which poses challenges particularly for under-resourced schools. However, I’d argue that the long-term returns – in terms of student outcomes, economic competitiveness, and social innovationfar outweigh the initial costs. We’re essentially investing in the next generation’s capacity to tackle the multifaceted challenges they’ll inherit, which strikes me as non-negotiable.

Phân tích:

Theme 2: Traditional vs Modern Creative Hobbies

Question 3: How have people’s creative hobbies changed compared to the past?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Compare and Contrast (past vs present)
  • Key words: changed, compared to the past
  • Cách tiếp cận: Describe past hobbies → Describe current hobbies → Analyze reasons for change → Possible implications

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

Creative hobbies have changed a lot. In the past, people did traditional hobbies like knitting, painting, or playing musical instruments. Now, many young people prefer digital hobbies like making videos or designing graphics on computers. This is because technology has developed and social media is very popular. People can share their creative work online easily now. Also, modern hobbies are more convenient because you can do them at home with just a computer.

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Clear comparison between past and present với some explanation
Could benefit from more specific examples và deeper exploration of implications.

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

This is quite a fascinating evolution to observe, actually. I’d say there’s been a fundamental shift in both the nature of creative hobbies and the underlying motivations behind them. Traditionally, creative pursuits were often tactile and analog – things like embroidery, woodworking, pottery, or playing acoustic instruments. These activities were typically passed down through generations, often within families or tight-knit communities, and had a slow, meditative quality to them. The focus was very much on the process itself and the intrinsic satisfaction of creating something with your hands.

Contrast this with today’s landscape, where digital creativity has become predominant. We’re seeing an explosion of hobbies like video editing, digital illustration, music production using software, and content creation for platforms like YouTube or TikTok. What’s particularly interesting is that modern creative hobbies are often outward-facing and performance-oriented – there’s usually an implicit or explicit audience component. People aren’t just creating; they’re curating, sharing, and often monetizing their creative output, which fundamentally changes the dynamic.

Several factors drive this transformation. Obviously, technological accessibility is paramount – tools that would have required professional studios and prohibitive costs are now available as smartphone apps. But I think there’s also been a cultural shift toward what some sociologists call “attention economy” – where visibility and engagement metrics become intertwined with the creative process itself. Additionally, the democratization of creative tools means barriers to entry have dropped dramatically, allowing more people to experiment with creative expression.

Interestingly, though, we’re also seeing a counter-trend – a kind of nostalgia-driven revival of traditional crafts among younger generations. There’s something almost rebellious about choosing to knit or do calligraphy in a digital age. I think this reflects a yearning for tangible, slower forms of creativity as a counterbalance to the frenetic pace of digital life. So while the overall trajectory is certainly toward digital creativity, the picture is more nuanced than simple replacement – it’s more like an expansion and diversification of what creative hobbies can be.

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Exceptional organization with past description → present description with analysis → driving factors → counter-trend insight. Shows sophisticated thinking về complexity of social change.
  • Vocabulary: Rich và precise (tactile, analog, intrinsic satisfaction, outward-facing, democratization, frenetic pace). Uses academic language naturally (sociologists call, overall trajectory).
  • Grammar: Full range với complex comparative structures, nominalization, advanced clauses. Completely flexible use.
  • Critical Thinking: Goes beyond simple comparison to analyze underlying causes và acknowledge complexity (counter-trend). References sociological concepts (attention economy). Shows awareness that change isn’t linear or simple.

Theme 3: Creativity and Personal Development

Question 4: What are the benefits of having a creative hobby for an individual?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Explain benefits (multiple reasons expected)
  • Key words: benefits, creative hobby, individual
  • Cách tiếp cận: List multiple benefits với explanation and examples cho mỗi benefit

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

There are many benefits of creative hobbies. First, they help reduce stress because people can focus on something they enjoy. Second, creative hobbies can improve skills like patience and concentration. For example, if someone paints, they need to be patient and careful. Third, these hobbies can make people feel happy and proud when they finish their work. Also, creative hobbies give people something interesting to do in free time instead of just watching TV.

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Lists multiple benefits với basic elaboration
  • Vocabulary: Simple benefit vocabulary (reduce stress, improve skills, feel happy)
Lacks sophisticated psychological or developmental terminology.

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

Creative hobbies offer a multitude of benefits that span psychological, cognitive, and even social dimensions. From a mental health perspective, engaging in creative activities has been shown to have genuinely therapeutic effects. There’s something deeply restorative about immersing yourself in a creative process – it induces what psychologists call a “flow state,” where you’re fully absorbed in the present moment, which serves as a powerful antidote to the chronic stress and rumination that plague modern life. I’ve read research suggesting that even short periods of creative activity can measurably reduce cortisol levels, the stress hormone.

Beyond stress relief, creative hobbies also foster important cognitive abilities. They enhance neuroplasticity – essentially, your brain’s ability to form new neural connections. When you’re learning a new creative skill, whether that’s playing an instrument or mastering a new art technique, you’re literally rewiring your brain in beneficial ways. This has implications for cognitive resilience as we age; there’s emerging evidence that people who maintain creative hobbies throughout life show slower cognitive decline.

There’s also a significant dimension of self-efficacy and identity. Creating something tangible gives you a sense of agency and accomplishment that’s increasingly rare in modern work environments, where contributions are often abstract or intangible. This is particularly valuable for people in jobs that feel unfulfilling or where they lack autonomy. A creative hobby can become a cornerstone of personal identity – it’s not just what you do, but part of who you are, which contributes to overall life satisfaction and sense of purpose.

Furthermore, creative hobbies can open up unexpected social opportunities. Communities form around shared creative interests, whether that’s online forums, local workshops, or collaborative projects. These connections are often particularly meaningful because they’re based on genuine shared passion rather than circumstantial proximity like workplace relationships. For some people, particularly introverts, creative communities provide a more comfortable way to connect with others than conventional social settings.

Finally, there’s something to be said about legacy and meaning-making. Creative work often outlasts its creator – you’re making something that carries your unique perspective and might bring joy or insight to others, even long after you’re gone. There’s a profound human drive to leave a mark, and creative hobbies offer a fulfilling avenue for that.

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Highly sophisticated với five distinct dimensions, each thoroughly developed. Excellent signposting (Beyond, Furthermore, Finally).
  • Vocabulary: Advanced psychological và developmental terminology (flow state, neuroplasticity, cognitive resilience, self-efficacy, agency). Perfect collocations throughout (chronic stress, emerging evidence, shared passion).
  • Grammar: Full range including nominalization (the rewiring of your brain), complex relative clauses, advanced passive structures. Completely flexible và accurate.
  • Critical Thinking: Demonstrates research awareness (mentions studies, psychologists’ terminology). Multi-dimensional analysis covering psychological, neurological, social, và philosophical aspects. Shows depth of understanding về human development và well-being.

💡 Key Language Features:

  • Academic references: “psychologists call”, “research suggesting”, “emerging evidence” – adds credibility
  • Cause-effect language: “induces”, “serves as”, “has implications for” – shows relationships
  • Contrasting language: “rather than”, “whereas” – helps comparison
  • Hedging: “there’s something to be said about”, “can potentially” – appropriate caution

Question 5: Do you think everyone has the potential to be creative?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Opinion about innate ability vs learned skill
  • Key words: everyone, potential, creative
  • Cách tiếp cận: State position → Explain reasoning → Address counterarguments → Conclude with nuanced view

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

Yes, I think everyone can be creative in some way. Some people think only artists or musicians are creative, but that’s not true. Creativity can be shown in many different ways, like cooking, solving problems at work, or even organizing things in a beautiful way. However, some people might be naturally more creative than others. But I believe with practice and the right environment, most people can develop their creativity.

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Clear position with supporting reasoning và acknowledgment of different perspective
  • Vocabulary: Basic vocabulary về creativity (artists, musicians, solving problems)
  • Tại sao Band 6-7: Addresses question với reasonable argument nhưng could be more nuanced. Lacks sophisticated discussion of nature vs nurture debate.

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

This is actually a contentious question that touches on the age-old nature versus nurture debate. My view is that yes, everyone possesses innate creative capacity, but the extent to which that potential is realized depends on a complex interplay of factors including environment, education, opportunity, and personal disposition.

I think the problem is that we’ve cultivated a rather narrow definition of creativity in popular consciousness – we tend to associate it exclusively with artistic pursuits or genius-level innovation. But if we broaden the lens, creativity is really about novel connections, adaptive thinking, and original problem-solving – capacities that are fundamentally human. Every child demonstrates remarkable creativity in their play, the way they make sense of the world, the questions they ask. So in that sense, creativity is hardwired into us; it’s part of what makes us human.

However, what happens to that native creativity as we mature is heavily influenced by our environment. Traditional educational systems, with their emphasis on conformity and predetermined answers, often inadvertently suppress creative thinking. There’s fascinating research by educational psychologist Sir Ken Robinson, who argues that schools essentially “educate creativity out of” children through rigid curricula and standardized assessments. Similarly, workplace cultures that penalize risk-taking or deviation from established practices can stifle adult creativity.

The good news is that creativity, unlike say perfect pitch which appears to have a critical developmental window, can be rekindled and nurtured at any age. Neuroscience tells us that the brain remains remarkably plastic throughout life, capable of forming new connections and adapting to new challenges. So while someone who’s spent decades in a creativity-hostile environment might find it challenging initially, with the right scaffoldingpermission to experiment, tolerance for failure, exposure to diverse ideas – that dormant creative capacity can resurface.

That said, I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge that there are likely individual differences in creative proclivities and peak creative potential. Some people may have cognitive styles or personality traits – like openness to experience or tolerance for ambiguity – that predispose them toward creative thinking. But I’d argue these differences are more about creative style and domain-specific talent than about whether someone “is creative” or not. It’s not a binary distinction but rather a spectrum where everyone has something to contribute.

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Exceptionally sophisticated với acknowledgment of debate → broad definition of creativity → environmental factors → neuroplasticity and potential → individual differences. Shows ability to consider multiple perspectives và present nuanced conclusion.
  • Vocabulary: Advanced academic vocabulary (contentious, innate capacity, interplay, proclivities, predispose, binary distinction). References research (Sir Ken Robinson) demonstrating broader knowledge.
  • Grammar: Full range with complex nominalization, conditional structures, passive voice, advanced clauses. Completely flexible use throughout.
  • Critical Thinking: Demonstrates familiarity with academic debates (nature vs nurture). References research và scientific concepts (neuroplasticity). Acknowledges complexity và resists oversimplification. Shows philosophical depth in considering what creativity means.

Theme 4: Creativity in Work and Education

Question 6: Should companies encourage employees to be more creative? Why or why not?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Should question về workplace policy
  • Key words: companies, encourage, employees, creative
  • Cách tiếp cận: Position → Benefits to companies → Potential challenges → How to implement effectively

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

Yes, companies should encourage creativity because it can help businesses grow. Creative employees can think of new ideas for products or better ways to work. This can help companies compete with other businesses. However, some companies might worry that creative freedom could cause problems or waste time. But overall, I think the advantages are more than the disadvantages. Companies can have specific times or projects for creative thinking.

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Has position, reasoning, và acknowledgment of challenges
  • Vocabulary: Basic business vocabulary (products, compete, businesses)
Could benefit from specific examples of companies or implementation strategies.

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

Absolutely, though I think it requires a more nuanced approach than simply telling employees to “be creative.” The business case for fostering creativity in the workplace is actually quite compelling from multiple angles. Firstly, in today’s rapidly evolving market landscape, companies that fail to innovate simply don’t survive. Disruptive competitors can emerge overnight, and clinging to outdated practices is essentially a death sentence. Organizations need employees who can spot opportunities, challenge assumptions, and devise novel solutions – and that requires creating an environment where creative thinking is not just permitted but actively cultivated.

Beyond competitive advantage, there are significant internal benefits. Companies with innovation-friendly cultures typically enjoy higher employee engagement and retention. There’s substantial evidence that people derive more satisfaction from work where they have autonomy and opportunity for creative input rather than merely executing predetermined tasks. Google’s famous “20% time” policy – where employees could spend a fifth of their time on self-directed projects – reportedly spawned major products like Gmail. While the policy’s actual implementation has been debated, it illustrates the principle that unleashing employee creativity can yield tangible returns.

However, I think companies often struggle with the inherent tension between creativity, which thrives on experimentation and accepts failure as part of the process, and traditional corporate priorities like efficiency, predictability, and risk management. You can’t schedule innovation from 2 to 3 PM on Thursdays, yet companies often treat creativity as something that can be compartmentalized into brainstorming sessions or suggestion boxes, which is rarely effective.

What’s needed is a more systemic approach. This includes tangible elements like providing resources and protected time for exploratory work, but also cultural shiftsrewarding intelligent risk-taking even when it doesn’t pan out, flattening hierarchies to ensure ideas can flow from anywhere in the organization, and cultivating psychological safety where people feel comfortable proposing unconventional ideas without fear of ridicule or career damage. Companies like Pixar and 3M have become case studies in this regard, having developed systematic approaches to institutionalizing creativity.

Of course, this isn’t one-size-fits-all – a nuclear power plant rightfully prioritizes adherence to established protocols over creative experimentation. But for most organizations operating in dynamic markets, the question isn’t whether to encourage creativity, but how to do so authentically and effectively. Given that the World Economic Forum lists creativity as one of the top skills for the future workforce, companies that neglect this dimension are essentially handicapping themselves in the talent war as well.

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Highly sophisticated với business case → internal benefits with example (Google) → inherent tensions → solutions with examples (Pixar, 3M) → qualifications → broader implications (World Economic Forum). Shows executive-level strategic thinking.
  • Vocabulary: Advanced business terminology (disruptive competitors, competitive advantage, tangible returns, systemic approach, psychological safety, institutionalizing creativity). Perfect business collocations throughout.
  • Grammar: Full flexibility với complex structures, nominalization, conditional forms, relative clauses. Completely accurate.
  • Critical Thinking: Demonstrates business awareness với specific company examples. Acknowledges complexity (tension between creativity and efficiency). Provides concrete solutions. Shows awareness of current trends (World Economic Forum). Considers context-dependent nature (nuclear plant example). Multi-stakeholder perspective (business, employees, competition).
