IELTS Speaking Part 2: Long Turn (Cue Card)

Ví dụ: Who – Steve (brother), What ideas – app design, startup, Why creative – problem solver, unique thinking.

Cue Card

Describe a person who is known for their creative ideas

You should say:

  • Who this person is
  • How you know this person
  • What creative ideas this person has
  • And explain why you think this person is creative

  • Who this person is: Giới thiệu người này (tên, mối quan hệ, nghề nghiệp/vai trò)
  • How you know this person: Giải thích bạn quen biết họ như thế nào (qua công việc, gia đình, bạn bè, truyền thông…)
  • What creative ideas this person has: Đây là phần quan trọng nhất – nêu cụ thể những ý tưởng sáng tạo của họ với examples
  • Explain why you think this person is creative: Phân tích qualities, characteristics, hoặc achievements khiến họ trở nên sáng tạo

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7

Thời lượng: Khoảng 1.5-2 phút

“I’d like to talk about my uncle, who I think is very creative. His name is Minh and he is 45 years old. He works as a teacher at a local secondary school in my hometown.

I have known him since I was a child because he is my mother’s younger brother. We often meet during family gatherings and holidays. He always tells interesting stories and makes everyone laugh.

My uncle has many creative ideas, especially in teaching. He doesn’t use traditional methods like other teachers. Instead, he creates fun games and activities to help students learn English. For example, he organized an English drama competition where students acted out famous stories. He also made learning videos and posted them on YouTube so students could study at home. Another creative thing he did was designing a mobile app with simple English lessons and quizzes.

I think he is creative because he always finds new ways to solve problems. When students felt bored with textbooks, he came up with these interesting solutions. He is also very open-minded and likes to try new things. His creativity makes learning more enjoyable for students, and many of them have improved their English because of his methods. That’s why I really admire his creative thinking.”

📝 Sample Answer – Band 7.5-8

Thời lượng: Khoảng 2-2.5 phút

“I’d like to tell you about my former university professor, Dr. Nguyen, who is widely recognized for her innovative approach to education. She’s in her early fifties and teaches digital marketing at the University of Economics in Ho Chi Minh City.

I first came across her work about five years ago when I was an undergraduate student. She was my lecturer for an entrepreneurship module, and her teaching style immediately stood out from other professors. What really caught my attention was her unique way of bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Dr. Nguyen has come up with numerous creative ideas throughout her career. One particularly groundbreaking initiative was her ‘Living Classroom’ project, where she transformed traditional lectures into hands-on workshops. Students weren’t just passive learners; they had to collaborate with real businesses to devise marketing strategies for actual products. She also pioneered the use of virtual reality in education, incorporating VR technology to simulate real-world business scenarios. Perhaps her most ingenious idea was creating a student-run consultancy that provided pro bono services to local startups, which gave students invaluable practical experience while contributing to the community.

I consider her exceptionally creative for several reasons. Firstly, she possesses the rare ability to identify gaps in the educational system and devise practical solutions. Her creativity isn’t just about generating novel ideas; it’s about implementing them effectively. She also demonstrates remarkable adaptability, constantly updating her methods to keep pace with industry changes. What truly sets her apart, though, is her willingness to take risks. Many educators stick to conventional methods, but she’s never hesitated to experiment, even if it meant facing criticism initially. Her forward-thinking mindset and genuine passion for innovation have not only enhanced students’ learning experiences but also inspired many of us to think more creatively in our own careers.”

📝 Sample Answer – Band 8.5-9

Thời lượng: 2.5-3 phút đầy đủ

“I’d like to talk about my childhood friend’s father, Mr. Tran, who is undoubtedly one of the most inventive people I’ve ever encountered. He’s an architect in his late sixties, and he’s been at the forefront of sustainable design in Vietnam for over three decades.

I’ve known him since I was about ten years old when my family moved next door to his. Growing up, I was perpetually fascinated by his unconventional lifestyle and out-of-the-box thinking. His house itself was a testament to his creativity – it was one of the first eco-friendly homes in our city, decades ahead of its time, featuring rainwater harvesting systems, solar panels, and ingeniously designed natural ventilation that eliminated the need for air conditioning.

What truly distinguishes Mr. Tran is his remarkable capacity to envision solutions that others simply overlook. One of his most acclaimed projects was the renovation of an abandoned factory into a thriving community hub that seamlessly integrated art galleries, urban gardens, and affordable housing. Rather than demolishing the structure, as most developers would have done, he preserved its industrial character while infusing it with modern functionality and green technology. He’s also spearheaded several initiatives to combat urban heat islands by advocating for and designing ‘vertical forests’ – buildings with extensive greenery that naturally cool the surroundings.

Perhaps what’s most compelling about his creativity is that it’s deeply rooted in social responsibility. He doesn’t merely pursue novelty for its own sake; every idea he conceives is geared toward solving real-world problems, particularly environmental challenges and housing inequality. His approach is remarkably holistic – he considers not just aesthetics and functionality, but also long-term sustainability, community impact, and economic viability.

I believe his creativity stems from several key attributes. First, he possesses an insatiable curiosity and never settles for conventional wisdom. He’s constantly reading, traveling, and engaging with diverse fields – from biology to sociology – which allows him to draw connections that others miss. Second, he demonstrates exceptional resilience; many of his ideas were initially met with skepticism or outright opposition, yet he persisted and ultimately vindicated his vision. Finally, he has this rare combination of visionary thinking and practical know-how, which enables him to translate abstract concepts into tangible realities.

What I find particularly inspiring is how his creativity has had a ripple effect on others, including myself. His example taught me that true innovation requires not just imagination but also courage, persistence, and a genuine commitment to making a positive difference. He’s shown that creativity, when channeled purposefully, can be a powerful force for social change.”

Các Câu Hỏi Thảo Luận Sâu

Theme 1: Creativity in Education

Question 1: Do you think schools should place more emphasis on developing students’ creativity?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Opinion question với yêu cầu justify
  • Key words: schools, emphasis, developing, creativity
  • Cách tiếp cận: Direct answer → Reasons (2-3) → Examples → Possible counter-argument/limitation

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“Yes, I believe schools should focus more on creativity. In today’s world, creative thinking is very important for success. Many jobs now need people who can think of new ideas and solve problems in different ways. Schools can help students develop creativity by having more art classes, group projects, and activities that encourage students to think differently. This will prepare them better for future careers.”

Absolutely, I believe education systems should place considerably more emphasis on nurturing creativity, and there are several compelling reasons for this. Firstly, in an era characterized by rapid technological advancement and constant disruption, the ability to think creatively and adapt to change has become arguably more valuable than rote memorization of facts. Students who develop strong creative capacities are better equipped to navigate uncertainty and devise innovative solutions to novel challenges.

Moreover, fostering creativity in education can address what I see as a critical gap in many traditional systems – the overemphasis on standardized testing and conformity. When students are encouraged to explore diverse perspectives, question assumptions, and experiment with unconventional approaches, they develop not just creativity but also critical thinking and intellectual confidence. For instance, countries like Finland that have integrated creative problem-solving into their curricula have seen remarkable outcomes in terms of student engagement and long-term success.

That said, it’s important to acknowledge that striking a balance is crucial. We can’t completely dismiss the importance of foundational knowledge and discipline. The ideal approach would be to weave creativity into existing subjects rather than treating it as a standalone component, thus ensuring students develop both solid fundamentals and innovative thinking capabilities.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Exceptionally well-organized: Direct strong answer → Reason 1 (economic/practical) + elaboration → Reason 2 (educational philosophy) + example → Balanced conclusion acknowledging complexity
  • Vocabulary: Highly sophisticated và precise (place emphasis on, nurturing, compelling reasons, rapid technological advancement, rote memorization, navigate uncertainty, overemphasis on, weave creativity into)
  • Grammar: Complex và varied structures: cleft sentences (what I see as), relative clauses, conditionals implied, passive voice, gerunds, parallel structures
  • Critical Thinking: Shows nuanced understanding with “That said” paragraph, acknowledges potential counter-arguments, proposes balanced solution

💡 Key Language Features:

  • Discourse markers: Absolutely, Firstly, Moreover, For instance, That said – guide listener through complex argument
  • Tentative language: arguably, I believe, would be – shows intellectual humility
  • Abstract nouns: conformity, disruption, uncertainty, fundamentals – characteristic của band cao
  • Collocations: place emphasis on, address a critical gap, striking a balance, weave into

Question 2: How can parents encourage creativity in their children?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Suggestion/How question
  • Key words: parents, encourage, creativity, children

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“Parents can encourage creativity in many ways. First, they should give children time to play freely without too many rules. They can also provide materials like paper, colors, and toys that allow children to create things. Another important thing is that parents should praise children’s creative efforts, not just good grades. They should ask children questions and listen to their ideas. This helps children feel confident to express themselves creatively.”

Well, there are numerous ways parents can cultivate their children’s creative potential, and I think it starts with creating an environment that values exploration over perfection. One crucial aspect is allowing children unstructured play time – periods where they’re free to pursue their own interests without predetermined outcomes. This autonomy enables them to experiment, make mistakes, and discover their own creative processes.

Another effective approach is exposing children to diverse experiences and stimuli. Whether it’s visiting museums, engaging with different cultures, or simply having conversations about thought-provoking topics, these experiences broaden children’s frames of reference and give them richer material to draw upon creatively. Research suggests that children who encounter varied perspectives and environments tend to develop more flexible thinking patterns.

Perhaps equally important is the way parents respond to their children’s creative efforts. Rather than evaluating every creation with judgment – whether positive or negative – parents should ask open-ended questions that encourage children to reflect on their own work: ‘What inspired this?’, ‘How did you decide to use these colors?’, ‘What might you do differently next time?’ This approach fosters intrinsic motivation rather than dependence on external validation.

Finally, I think parents need to model creative behavior themselves. Children are remarkably perceptive and tend to emulate what they observe. When parents demonstrate curiosity, embrace challenges, and approach problems with an experimental mindset, they’re essentially providing a living blueprint for creative thinking.”

  • Vocabulary: Sophisticated và precise (cultivate, unstructured play, autonomy, frames of reference, intrinsic motivation, perceptive, emulate, experimental mindset, living blueprint)
  • Grammar: Wide range: relative clauses, gerunds, passive voice, causative structures (enable them to, encourage children to), conditionals
  • Critical Thinking: Cites research, explains psychological mechanisms (intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation), considers multiple dimensions của issue

💡 Key Language Features:

  • Discourse markers: Well, One crucial aspect, Another effective approach, Perhaps equally important, Finally
  • Academic/formal vocabulary: cultivate, autonomy, stimuli, intrinsic motivation
  • Hedging/tentative language: I think, suggests, tend to – shows academic tone
  • Collocations: unstructured play, frames of reference, open-ended questions, experimental mindset

Theme 2: Creativity and Innovation in Society

Question 3: Why do some people seem to be more creative than others?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Cause/Reason question
  • Key words: some people, more creative, than others
  • Cách tiếp cận: Multiple factors (nature/nurture) → Examples → Acknowledge complexity

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“I think some people are naturally more creative because of their personality. They like to try new things and are not afraid of making mistakes. Also, their education and family background can affect creativity. People who grew up in families that encouraged them to explore and ask questions might be more creative. Additionally, some jobs require more creative thinking, so people in these jobs practice creativity more and become better at it.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Identifies multiple factors (personality, background, practice) nhưng chưa develop deeply
  • Vocabulary: Basic với limited range (naturally more creative, not afraid, encouraged)

This is a fascinating question that touches on the age-old debate between nature and nurture. From my perspective, creativity differences stem from a complex interplay of several factors rather than a single cause.

Firstly, there’s undoubtedly a genetic component. Research in cognitive psychology suggests that certain personality traits – such as openness to experience, tolerance for ambiguity, and willingness to take risks – are partially heritable and strongly correlated with creative thinking. Some individuals are naturally predisposed to question conventions and seek novel connections, while others may be more inclined toward structured thinking.

However, I’d argue that environmental factors play an equally crucial role, if not more so. Children who grow up in intellectually stimulating environments, where curiosity is rewarded and failure is reframed as a learning opportunity, tend to develop stronger creative capacities. Conversely, rigid educational systems or risk-averse cultures can suppress creative impulses, even in naturally imaginative individuals.

Another significant factor is deliberate practice and exposure to diverse disciplines. Creativity isn’t just an innate gift; it’s also a skill that can be honed through consistent effort. People who actively cultivate habits like lateral thinking, maintaining curiosity, and synthesizing ideas from different fields often demonstrate greater creativity, regardless of their initial disposition.

Lastly, I think we need to consider societal expectations and opportunities. Someone’s creativity might remain dormant simply because their circumstances don’t provide the time, resources, or encouragement to explore it. This is why we often see creative breakthroughs emerge more frequently in environments that offer autonomy, value experimentation, and tolerate failure.

So, to sum up, while some people may have certain inherent advantages, creativity is predominantly shaped by a combination of upbringing, education, practice, and opportunity. The encouraging news is that this means creativity can be developed and nurtured rather than being a fixed trait.”

Question 4: Do you think technology has made people more or less creative?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Opinion với comparison (more or less)
  • Key words: technology, made, more/less creative
  • Cách tiếp cận: Balanced view acknowledging both sides → Personal stance → Examples for both → Nuanced conclusion

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“This is a difficult question. I think technology has both positive and negative effects on creativity. On the positive side, technology gives us many tools for creating things, like design software and editing apps. People can easily make videos, music, or artwork. However, technology can also make people less creative because they rely too much on it. For example, some people just copy ideas from the internet instead of thinking of their own. Overall, I think it depends on how people use technology.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Acknowledges both sides, gives examples, has conclusion – good structure
  • Vocabulary: Basic (positive/negative effects, design software, copy ideas, depends on)

Well, I think this is quite a contentious issue with compelling arguments on both sides. My view is that technology itself is fundamentally neutral – it’s a double-edged sword that can either amplify or diminish creativity depending on how it’s utilized.

On one hand, technology has undeniably democratized creative expression and lowered barriers to entry. Consider how digital tools have revolutionized fields like music production, graphic design, and filmmaking. Someone with a laptop and internet connection can now access sophisticated software that would have cost thousands of dollars just a decade ago. This unprecedented access has unleashed a wave of creativity from people who would otherwise have been excluded from these fields due to financial constraints. Moreover, technology facilitates rapid iteration and experimentation – you can try countless variations of a design or composition without incurring the costs that would have been prohibitive in the analog era.

On the other hand, there are legitimate concerns about technology fostering a certain homogenization and passivity. The algorithmic nature of social media platforms can create echo chambers that limit exposure to diverse perspectives, potentially stifling original thinking. Furthermore, the instant availability of information can discourage the kind of deep, sustained thinking that often underlies genuine creativity. When we can Google any answer or use AI to generate content, there’s a risk of becoming overly reliant on these tools rather than developing our own creative muscles. The paradox of choice that technology presents can also be paralyzing – having infinite options sometimes leads to decision fatigue rather than innovation.

That being said, I lean toward the view that technology has been a net positive for creativity, provided it’s used mindfully. The key is striking a balance between leveraging technology as a tool and preserving the cognitive space for original thought. Creative individuals who understand technology’s limitations and harness its capabilities without becoming dependent on it can achieve things that simply weren’t possible before. The emerging field of generative AI, for example, is simultaneously a tool for creation and a catalyst for reimagining what creativity means.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Sophisticated: Intro với clear stance (neutral/balanced) → Argument for positive impact (democratization + examples) → Argument for negative impact (homogenization + concerns) → Nuanced conclusion với personal lean. Exceptional organization
  • Vocabulary: Highly advanced (contentious issue, double-edged sword, democratized, unprecedented access, homogenization, algorithmic nature, echo chambers, paradox of choice, net positive, cognitive space, catalyst for)
  • Grammar: Very complex: conditionals (would have cost, would have been excluded), passive voice, relative clauses, participles, gerunds, sophisticated modals. Virtually error-free
  • Critical Thinking: Shows deep analysis của multiple dimensions, considers paradoxes, acknowledges complexity, provides specific examples, reaches nuanced conclusion. Demonstrates critical evaluation

💡 Key Language Features:

  • Discourse markers: Well, On one hand, On the other hand, Moreover, Furthermore, That being said – expertly guide complex argument
  • Tentative/Academic language: My view is, I lean toward, provided, can be – shows intellectual sophistication
  • Abstract concepts: democratization, homogenization, algorithmic nature, cognitive space

Theme 3: Creative Careers and Industries

Question 5: What are the advantages and disadvantages of working in a creative field?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Advantages/Disadvantages comparison
  • Key words: advantages, disadvantages, working, creative field
  • Cách tiếp cận: Balanced structure covering both sides với specific examples cho each point

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“Working in creative fields has both good and bad points. The advantages are that creative jobs are usually interesting and not boring. People can express themselves and do what they love. They also feel satisfied when they create something new. However, there are disadvantages too. Creative careers are often unstable and the income can be unpredictable. Many creative workers face financial difficulties, especially when they are starting. Also, there is a lot of competition in these fields. So people need to think carefully before choosing a creative career.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Clear organization với advantages first, then disadvantages
  • Vocabulary: Basic (good points, not boring, express themselves, financial difficulties)
  • Tại sao Band 6-7: Covers main ideas but lacks sophistication, limited vocabulary range, simple grammar

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8-9:

Working in creative industries presents a unique set of advantages and challenges that are quite distinct from traditional career paths.

Starting with the advantages, perhaps the most significant benefit is the intrinsic satisfaction that comes from bringing ideas to life. Creative professionals often report higher levels of job satisfaction because their work is inherently meaningful – they’re not just performing routine tasks but actively contributing to culture, innovation, or aesthetic experiences. This sense of purpose and fulfillment can be profoundly rewarding, especially when one’s work resonates with audiences or makes a tangible impact. Additionally, creative fields typically offer greater autonomy and flexibility in how work is approached. Rather than being confined to rigid protocols, creative workers often have the freedom to experiment, set their own schedules, and define their own processes.

Moreover, creative careers can provide diverse opportunities and the potential for considerable recognition. A successful creative project can open doors to new collaborations, audiences, and even international acclaim. The work itself is often inherently varied and intellectually stimulating, which keeps professionals engaged and continuously learning.

On the flip side, creative fields are notoriously precarious in terms of financial stability. Unlike conventional careers with predictable salary structures, many creative professionals grapple with irregular income streams, especially in the early stages of their careers. This financial uncertainty can create significant stress and may necessitate juggling multiple projects or having a supplementary income source. Furthermore, the market for creative work is often oversaturated, making competition exceptionally fierce. Countless talented individuals are vying for limited opportunities, which can lead to frequent rejection and the need for remarkable resilience.

Another considerable challenge is the blurred boundary between work and personal life. When your profession is also your passion, it can be difficult to disconnect, potentially leading to burnout. Creative work also often lacks the institutional support and benefits – such as health insurance, retirement plans, or paid leave – that are standard in traditional employment.

To conclude, while creative careers offer unparalleled opportunities for self-expression and fulfillment, they demand a high tolerance for uncertainty and the emotional fortitude to navigate rejection and instability. It’s a path that can be immensely rewarding for those who are prepared for its unique challenges.”

  • Key words: definition, creativity, changed, over time
  • Cách tiếp cận: Past understanding → Present understanding → Factors driving change → Future speculation (optional)

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“I think the meaning of creativity has changed a lot. In the past, creativity was mainly about art, like painting or music. Only artists were considered creative. But now, creativity is seen in many different fields. People think that creativity is important in business, science, and technology too. Also, in modern times, creativity is not just about making beautiful things but also about solving problems in new ways. The internet and technology have changed how people think about creativity because now more people can share their creative work easily.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Shows historical progression (past → present) với some examples
  • Vocabulary: Basic (changed a lot, mainly about, considered, think that)

The concept of creativity has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a relatively narrow and elitist notion to something far more democratic and multifaceted.

Historically, particularly during the Renaissance and through much of the 19th century, creativity was predominantly associated with artistic genius – the lone artist or visionary thinker who possessed some almost mystical ability to create works of beauty or profound insight. This romanticized view positioned creativity as an innate gift bestowed upon a select few – the Michelangelos, Beethovens, and Shakespeares of the world. Ordinary people were largely excluded from this creative elite, and creativity was primarily confined to the arts and, to some extent, scientific discovery.

However, the 20th century brought about significant shifts in how we conceptualize creativity. The rise of psychology as a discipline led to more systematic study of creative thinking, demystifying it and revealing it as a cognitive process that could be understood and potentially cultivated rather than simply possessed innately. Pioneers like psychologist J.P. Guilford argued that creative thinking involved identifiable skills such as divergent thinking and problem-solving – skills that existed on a continuum rather than being an all-or-nothing trait.

In contemporary times, we’ve seen an even more expansive redefinition. Creativity is now recognized as essential across virtually all domains – from business and entrepreneurship to technology, education, and even everyday problem-solving. The concept has broadened to encompass not just artistic expression but also innovation, adaptive thinking, and the ability to synthesize diverse ideas into novel solutions. Terms like ‘design thinking’ and ‘creative problem-solving’ reflect this democratization, suggesting that creativity is a learnable skill set rather than an exclusive gift.

Several factors have driven this evolution. Firstly, the accelerating pace of technological and social change has elevated the importance of adaptability and innovative thinking in the workplace. Secondly, the digital revolution has lowered barriers to creative production and distribution, enabling virtually anyone with internet access to create and share content globally. This grassroots creativity has challenged traditional gatekeepers and broadened our understanding of what counts as creative work.

Looking ahead, I suspect the definition will continue to evolve, particularly as we grapple with questions about artificial creativity – whether AI-generated art or ideas can truly be considered creative, or if creativity remains inherently a human attribute. This ongoing conversation will likely further refine how we understand this fundamentally important yet surprisingly elusive concept.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Exceptional organization: Intro establishing transformation → Historical view (Renaissance-19th century) → 20th century shift → Contemporary understanding → Factors driving change → Future speculation. Demonstrates comprehensive understanding
  • Vocabulary: Highly sophisticated và academic (undergone transformation, elitist notion, predominantly associated with, romanticized view, innate gift, demystifying, cognitive process, expansive redefinition, democratization, grassroots creativity, elusive concept)
