IELTS Speaking Part 1: Introduction and Interview

Question: Do you enjoy spending time with your family?
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:
Yes, I really enjoy spending time with my family. We usually have dinner together on weekends and talk about our week. It helps me relax after a busy week at work, and I feel happy when I’m with them.
📝 Sample Answer – Band 8-9:
Absolutely! I cherish every moment I spend with my family. We make it a point to have a proper sit-down dinner together at least twice a week, where we catch up on each other’s lives and share stories. These moments are incredibly rejuvenating for me, especially after a hectic week at the office. There’s something really comforting about being surrounded by people who know you inside out.
Phân tích:
- Điểm mạnh: Sử dụng các cụm từ tự nhiên và native-like như “cherish every moment”, “make it a point to”, “catch up on each other’s lives”, cấu trúc câu phức tạp hơn với relative clause “people who know you inside out”, vocabulary phong phú với các tính từ cảm xúc như “rejuvenating”, “comforting”, giọng điệu nhiệt tình thể hiện qua “Absolutely!” và “incredibly”.
💡 Key Vocabulary & Expressions:
- cherish every moment: trân trọng từng khoảnh khắc, đánh giá cao thời gian quý báu
- make it a point to: cố gắng làm điều gì đó một cách có ý thức, đặt làm ưu tiên
- catch up on each other’s lives: cập nhật, trao đổi về cuộc sống của nhau
- incredibly rejuvenating: cực kỳ giúp phục hồi năng lượng, làm tươi mới tinh thần
- hectic week: tuần bận rộn, căng thẳng
- comforting: mang lại cảm giác an tâm, thoải mái
Question: How often do you have family gatherings?
🎯 Cách tiếp cận:
- Nêu tần suất cụ thể (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly)
- Giải thích nguyên nhân của tần suất đó (work schedules, distance, traditions)
- Có thể so sánh với quá khứ để câu trả lời thêm phần thú vị
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:
We have family gatherings about once a month. Everyone is quite busy with work and study, so it’s hard to meet more often. We usually meet on special occasions like birthdays or holidays. Sometimes we meet more during Tet holiday.
📝 Sample Answer – Band 8-9:
Well, we get together as a family roughly once a month, though it varies depending on everyone’s schedules. With most of my relatives juggling demanding jobs and family responsibilities, coordinating everyone’s availability can be quite challenging. We tend to have more frequent get-togethers during festive seasons like Tet, when we might see each other several times a week. I must say, the quality of time we spend together matters more than the frequency.
Phân tích:
- Điểm mạnh: Sử dụng discourse marker “Well” tự nhiên, cụm từ “get together” thay vì “meet” native hơn, vocabulary chính xác với “juggling demanding jobs”, “coordinating availability”, thể hiện critical thinking khi nói “quality of time matters more than frequency”, cấu trúc câu phức hợp với dependent clauses “when we might see each other”.

- the quality of time: chất lượng thời gian (không chỉ về số lượng)
Question: What do you usually do during family gatherings?
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:
During family gatherings, we usually have a big meal together first. Then the adults talk while children play games. Sometimes we watch TV together or play cards. I like it when we share stories about what happened during the week.
📝 Sample Answer – Band 8-9:
Our family gatherings typically revolve around food – we usually have an elaborate home-cooked meal where everyone contributes a dish. After we’ve had our fill, the older generation tends to reminisce about the past while sipping Vietnamese coffee, and we younger ones either engage in lively debates about current affairs or play traditional card games like Tiến lên. What I appreciate most is the intergenerational bonding that happens naturally – my nieces and nephews running around while soaking up stories from their grandparents.

- reminisce about the past: hồi tưởng về quá khứ
- engage in lively debates: tham gia các cuộc tranh luận sôi nổi

IELTS Speaking Part 2: Long Turn (Cue Card)
Cue Card
Describe a recent family gathering that was enjoyable
You should say:
- When and where it took place
- Who attended the gathering
- What you did during the gathering
- And explain why it was enjoyable for you
- When and where: Cần nêu rõ thời gian cụ thể (ngày, tháng hoặc dịp gì) và địa điểm (nhà ai, nhà hàng, nơi nào). Đừng chỉ nói “last month” mà hãy cụ thể hơn như “during the Mid-Autumn Festival last September”.
- What you did: Mô tả các hoạt động theo trình tự thời gian, tạo cấu trúc logic cho câu chuyện. Sử dụng sequencing words như “first”, “then”, “after that”, “finally”.
Đây là nơi sử dụng emotional vocabulary và show your personality.
Câu “explain” quan trọng: Phần explain thường chiếm 30-40% thời gian nói của bạn và là yếu tố quyết định band điểm. Examiner muốn nghe không chỉ “it was fun” mà “why exactly it was fun for you personally”. Sử dụng các cụm từ như “what made it special was…”, “the reason I found it so enjoyable was…”, “what I appreciated most about that day was…”.
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7
Thời lượng: Khoảng 1.5-2 phút
I’d like to talk about a family gathering that happened two months ago at my grandmother’s house. It was my cousin’s birthday party, so many family members came together to celebrate.
About twenty people attended the gathering, including my grandparents, my parents, my aunts and uncles, and several cousins. Some of them live far away, so we don’t see them very often. It was nice to see everyone in one place.
During the gathering, we did many things. First, we had a big lunch with lots of traditional Vietnamese food like spring rolls, pho, and grilled pork. My grandmother cooked most of the dishes, and everything was delicious. After lunch, we sang birthday songs and cut the cake. Then, the children played games in the garden while the adults sat and talked. We also took many photos together to remember the day.
I found this gathering very enjoyable for several reasons. First of all, I got to see my relatives who I hadn’t seen for a long time. We talked about many things and caught up on each other’s lives. Secondly, the food was really good, especially my grandmother’s cooking. Finally, the atmosphere was very warm and happy. Everyone was smiling and laughing. It made me feel happy to see my family together. These moments are precious because everyone is usually busy with work and study. This gathering reminded me how important family is.

📝 Sample Answer – Band 7.5-8
Thời lượng: Khoảng 2-2.5 phút
I’d like to share with you a memorable family gathering that took place just last month, during the Mid-Autumn Festival, at my grandparents’ spacious home in the countryside. It was one of those rare occasions when our extended family managed to get together under one roof.
The gathering brought together approximately three generations of our family – around 25 people in total. My elderly grandparents were the center of attention, surrounded by their children, including my parents and five sets of aunts and uncles, as well as a whole bunch of cousins ranging from young children to adults in their thirties. What made it particularly special was that my uncle, who’s been working overseas for the past five years, managed to fly back for the occasion.
As for the activities, we started the day with a traditional family feast around noon. The dining table was laden with an array of home-cooked dishes, from savory sticky rice to mouth-watering braised pork, all prepared by my grandmother and aunts. After the meal, we participated in various activities that kept everyone entertained. The children were thrilled to carry lanterns and watch lion dance performances we’d arranged in the courtyard, while the adults engaged in nostalgic conversations, reminiscing about old times. We also played some traditional Vietnamese games like “đập niêu” – the pot-smashing game – which sparked a lot of laughter even among the elderly members.
What made this gathering exceptionally enjoyable for me was the sense of belonging it created. In today’s fast-paced world, we rarely have opportunities to slow down and reconnect with our roots. Seeing three generations interacting so naturally – grandparents sharing wisdom with their grandchildren, cousins bonding over childhood memories – reminded me of the importance of maintaining family ties. I was particularly touched by watching my grandmother’s face light up when she saw all her children and grandchildren together. There was this intangible warmth in the air, a feeling that we were all part of something bigger than ourselves. It reinforced my belief that no matter how busy life gets, these family connections are what truly matter in the end.

📝 Sample Answer – Band 8.5-9
Thời lượng: 2.5-3 phút đầy đủ
I’d like to recount a particularly heartwarming family gathering that took place a couple of months back, coinciding with my grandfather’s 80th birthday celebration. We convened at my uncle’s beautifully renovated villa on the outskirts of Hanoi, which provided the perfect backdrop for such a momentous occasion.
The gathering was remarkably well-attended, with approximately 30 family members making the effort to be there, spanning four generations of our family. At the heart of it all was my sprightly grandfather, surrounded by his children – five sons and daughters including my mother – their spouses, a motley crew of grandchildren in various stages of life, and even three great-grandchildren who added an extra dimension of joy to the celebration. What made the attendance particularly noteworthy was that my cousin, who’s been pursuing her PhD in Australia, made the long journey home specifically for this occasion, which speaks volumes about the significance of family in our culture.
In terms of how the day unfolded, it was meticulously planned yet wonderfully spontaneous at the same time. The festivities kicked off with a sumptuous multi-course lunch that was nothing short of a culinary masterpiece. My aunts had collaborated to prepare an impressive spread of both traditional and contemporary Vietnamese cuisine – from aromatic lemongrass chicken to delicately prepared fresh spring rolls, each dish reflecting the diverse culinary talents within our family. Following the meal, we organized a rather unconventional but thoroughly entertaining activity – a family talent show where members from each generation showcased their skills. My grandfather stole the show by reciting classical Vietnamese poetry from memory, which left everyone in awe of his mental acuity at his age. The younger generation performed K-pop dances, while my mother’s generation treated us to nostalgic songs from the 1980s. As the afternoon gave way to evening, we gathered around a bonfire in the garden, sharing stories and passing down family history to the younger members, which transformed the event into something profoundly meaningful.
What rendered this gathering truly exceptional and deeply fulfilling for me was the palpable sense of continuity it provided. In an era where families are increasingly fragmented by geographic distance and busy lifestyles, this event served as a powerful reminder of our shared heritage and collective identity. What struck me most was observing the seamless generational exchange taking place – my grandfather imparting life lessons earned through eight decades of experience, my parents’ generation bridging the old and new, and my generation absorbing these narratives while simultaneously contributing our contemporary perspectives. There was something profoundly moving about seeing my youngest cousin, barely three years old, sitting on my grandfather’s lap, completely engrossed in his stories, albeit not fully comprehending them yet. This tangible connection between past, present, and future epitomized what family truly means. Moreover, the gathering alleviated the isolation I’d been feeling from months of demanding work commitments. Being enveloped in that unconditional warmth and acceptance that only family can provide was incredibly restorative on a personal level. It reaffirmed my conviction that regardless of how globalized our world becomes, these intimate family connections remain the bedrock of our emotional well-being and identity.

Band 6-7 Answer:
Not very often, maybe once or twice a month. Everyone is busy with work, so it’s difficult to arrange.

Well, I’d say we manage to gather roughly once a month, though during peak festive periods like Tet, we might see each other more frequently. It’s always a delicate balancing act between everyone’s schedules.
Question 2: Would you like to have more family gatherings in the future?
Band 6-7 Answer:
Yes, definitely. I think family is very important and we should spend more time together.

Những câu hỏi rounding off này thường short và sweet, nhưng vẫn là cơ hội để showcase vocabulary và fluency trước khi move on to Part 3. Tương tự như describe a time when you helped someone with a personal problem, việc thể hiện sự quan tâm và emotional connection trong câu trả lời sẽ giúp bạn ghi điểm cao hơn.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Two-way Discussion
Theme 1: Family Values and Modern Society
Question 1: Why do you think family gatherings are important in modern society?
- Key words: “family gatherings”, “important”, “modern society” – focus vào significance trong context of contemporary life
- Cách tiếp cận: Direct answer (Yes, they are important because…) → Reason 1 + explanation/example → Reason 2 + explanation/example → Optional: acknowledge counterpoint hoặc conclusion
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:
I think family gatherings are very important in modern society for several reasons. First, people are very busy nowadays with work and study, so they don’t have much time to see their family members. Family gatherings give them a chance to spend quality time together. Second, these gatherings help maintain family relationships and traditions. When families meet, they can share their experiences and support each other. This is especially important for children because they can learn about their family history and culture. So family gatherings play an important role in keeping families close.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Clear structure với direct answer → two reasons → conclusion. Sử dụng basic signposting với “First”, “Second”.
Well, I’d argue that family gatherings have become even more crucial in today’s modern society, precisely because our lives have become so fragmented and digitally mediated. For one thing, in an era where families are often geographically dispersed due to work opportunities or education, these in-person reunions serve as vital touchpoints that help maintain emotional bonds that can’t be replicated through video calls or text messages. There’s something irreplaceable about physical presence and face-to-face interaction that strengthens familial ties in ways that digital communication simply cannot match.
Beyond the personal level, family gatherings also play a critical role in preserving cultural heritage and transmitting values across generations. In Vietnam, for instance, these occasions often involve traditional rituals, storytelling, and the preparation of ancestral recipes – all of which serve as living repositories of cultural knowledge that might otherwise be lost in our increasingly globalized world. Moreover, from a psychological perspective, research has shown that individuals with strong family connections tend to have better mental health outcomes and greater resilience when facing life’s challenges. In essence, family gatherings function as social safety nets that provide both emotional support and a sense of belonging – commodities that are becoming increasingly precious in our fast-paced, individualistic modern society.

Question 2: How have family gatherings changed compared to the past?
🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:
- Dạng: Compare and Contrast (Past vs Present) – cần identify changes và explain reasons
- Key words: “changed”, “compared to the past” – focus on differences over time
- Cách tiếp cận: Acknowledge change → Describe past situation → Contrast with present → Explain reasons for changes → Optional: implications or personal view
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:
Family gatherings have changed a lot compared to the past. In the past, families were bigger and people lived closer together, so gatherings happened more often. Everyone would meet at grandparents’ house for meals and celebrations. But nowadays, families are smaller and people often live far away from each other because of work or study. So gatherings are less frequent. Also, the way people interact has changed. In the past, people talked face-to-face, but now young people often use their phones even during family gatherings. Technology has changed how families spend time together.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Adequate comparison structure: past → present → technology factor. Basic contrast markers như “But nowadays”, “also”.
Undoubtedly, family gatherings have undergone quite significant transformations over the past few decades, largely driven by broader social and economic changes. If we look back to previous generations, family gatherings were typically far more frequent and elaborate affairs. Extended families would convene regularly – often weekly or even daily in rural areas – as most family members lived within close proximity to one another. These gatherings were central fixtures of social life, often revolving around shared meals, agricultural activities, or religious observances.
In stark contrast, modern family gatherings tend to be more sporadic and deliberately planned, rather than spontaneous everyday occurrences. This shift can be attributed to several factors. Primarily, increased urbanization and economic mobility have scattered families across different cities or even countries, making frequent meetings logistically challenging. Additionally, the nature of the gatherings themselves has evolved. While traditional gatherings were often multi-day affairs involving elaborate preparations and rituals, contemporary ones tend to be more condensed and pragmatically organized to accommodate everyone’s hectic schedules.
Perhaps the most notable change, however, is the intrusion of technology into these gatherings. Where previous generations engaged in uninterrupted face-to-face conversations and communal activities, modern gatherings often see participants simultaneously engaged with their digital devices, creating what sociologists call “alone together” phenomena. That said, technology has also facilitated new forms of connection – virtual gatherings via video calls have become increasingly common, especially in the wake of the pandemic, allowing families separated by vast distances to maintain connections that would have been impossible in earlier eras. So while the form of family gatherings has certainly evolved, the underlying human need for family connection remains fundamentally unchanged.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Exceptional organization: introduction với thesis → detailed description of past → contrast với present với multiple explanations → technology as double-edged sword → balanced conclusion. Perfect use of discourse markers creating seamless flow.
- Vocabulary: Outstanding range với sophisticated expressions: “undergone transformations”, “convene regularly”, “close proximity”, “logistically challenging”, “intrusion of technology”, “alone together phenomena”. Theme 2: Future Trends and Family Dynamics
Question 3: Do you think family gatherings will become more or less important in the future?
- Key words: “future”, “more or less important” – focus on trend prediction
- Cách tiếp cận: State prediction → Provide reasons supporting this trend → Consider counterarguments → Conclude với personal stance
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:
I think family gatherings will become more important in the future. As people’s lives get busier and more stressful, they will need family support even more. Also, many people are realizing that technology cannot replace real human connection. We can see that after COVID-19, people appreciate family time more than before. So I believe people will make more effort to have family gatherings in the future, even if it’s difficult to arrange.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Clear prediction → reasons → example (COVID) → conclusion. Logical progression.
This is quite a thought-provoking question, and I think the answer is somewhat paradoxical. On the one hand, I believe family gatherings will become increasingly valuable in people’s consciousness precisely because they’re becoming more rare. As our society continues to become more globalized and digitally oriented, with people pursuing opportunities across international borders and spending more time in virtual spaces, the scarcity of in-person family interactions will likely elevate their perceived importance. It’s a classic case of “you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone” – the rarity itself will make these gatherings more treasured and deliberately prioritized.
On the other hand, the practical reality is that organizing these gatherings will become increasingly challenging. With career demands intensifying, families becoming more geographically scattered, and younger generations potentially having different values regarding traditional family structures, the frequency of such gatherings might actually decline. However, I’d argue this doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be less important – rather, they might become more intentional and meaningful precisely because they require more effort to arrange.
Looking ahead, I envision a future where family gatherings might take on hybrid forms, blending physical and virtual participation to accommodate the realities of modern life. We might see shorter but more concentrated gatherings – perhaps weekend family retreats rather than daily interactions – that are carefully curated to maximize meaningful connection. Ultimately, while the format may evolve, I’m cautiously optimistic that the fundamental human need for family connection will ensure that these gatherings, in whatever form they take, remain a cornerstone of social life. The key will be adapting traditions to fit contemporary realities while preserving their essential spirit.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Sophisticated với acknowledgment of complexity → two contrasting perspectives với detailed reasoning → future speculation với specific predictions → balanced conclusion. Demonstrates ability to see multiple dimensions of issue.
- Vocabulary: Exceptional với precise, sophisticated choices: “thought-provoking”, “paradoxical”, “elevate their perceived importance”, “deliberately prioritized”, “cautiously optimistic”, “fundamental human need”, “cornerstone”. - Grammar: Full range masterfully used: conditional structures, future forms mixed với present for timeless truths, passive constructions, complex sentences với embedding, participle phrases (“blending”, “Looking ahead”), comparative structures.
- Critical Thinking: Outstanding analytical depth với recognition of paradox, consideration of multiple factors (economic, social, technological, generational), specific predictions về future forms, balanced perspective acknowledging both challenges và opportunities, sophisticated conclusion về adaptation vs preservation.
💡 Key Language Features:
- Introducing complexity: “This is quite thought-provoking”, “the answer is somewhat paradoxical”, “On the one hand…On the other hand” – showing nuanced thinking
- Hedging predictions: “I envision”, “might take on”, “I’m cautiously optimistic” – appropriate uncertainty about future
- Cause-effect sophisticated: “precisely because”, “As our society continues to…”, “will ensure that” – complex causal reasoning
- Contrasting ideas: “However, I’d argue”, “rather”, “while the format may evolve” – balanced argumentation
Question 4: What role do children play in family gatherings?
🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:
- Dạng: Role/Function analysis – cần identify và explain different roles
- Key words: “role”, “children”, “family gatherings” – focus on children’s significance/contribution
- Cách tiếp cận: Identify main roles → Explain each role với examples → Consider changes across ages/contexts → Conclude với broader significance
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:
Children play an important role in family gatherings. First, they bring joy and energy to the gathering. When children play and laugh, it makes everyone happy. Second, children are the center of attention, especially for grandparents who love spending time with their grandchildren. Third, family gatherings are good opportunities for children to learn about family traditions and values. They can hear stories from older family members and learn about their family history. So children are very important for making gatherings enjoyable and meaningful.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Clear với multiple roles identified → explanations for each → conclusion. Good use of “First, Second, Third”.
- Tại sao Band 6-7: Roles clearly identified, reasoning logical, grammar accurate, ideas relevant nhưng analysis somewhat superficial, lacks specific examples hoặc cultural insights, vocabulary functional but not impressive.
📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8-9:
Children play multifaceted and quite fascinating roles in family gatherings, serving as both participants and catalysts for family connection. Most obviously, they serve as natural icebreakers and mood elevators – their spontaneous laughter, uninhibited energy, and infectious enthusiasm have this remarkable ability to dissolve tension and create a more relaxed, joyful atmosphere that encourages adults to let their guard down and engage more authentically. I’ve noticed that even in families where adult members might have unresolved tensions, children’s presence often provides neutral ground that helps navigate these complex dynamics.
Beyond this social function, children also play a crucial symbolic role as living embodiments of family continuity and legacy. In many Asian cultures, including Vietnamese culture, grandparents often view family gatherings as opportunities to impart wisdom, share family stories, and transmit cultural values to younger generations. Children, whether consciously or not, serve as vessels for this intergenerational knowledge transfer. When my grandfather recounts stories of his youth during family gatherings, he’s not merely reminiscing – he’s actively constructing our family narrative and instilling a sense of identity and belonging in the youngest members.
Interestingly, the role of children in family gatherings is somewhat age-dependent. Younger children tend to be more passive recipients of attention and affection, serving primarily as objects of delight for extended family. However, as children mature into adolescence, their role often shifts – they begin bridging generational divides by introducing new perspectives, technologies, or cultural trends, essentially serving as windows into the contemporary world for older family members. I’d go so far as to say that children, in their various developmental stages, serve as unifying forces that give family gatherings purpose and vitality, transforming what might otherwise be obligatory social rituals into genuinely meaningful connections that span generations.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Exceptional với multi-layered analysis: social role → symbolic/cultural role → developmental progression → synthesizing conclusion. Each paragraph explores different dimension với depth.
- Vocabulary: Outstanding range: “multifaceted”, “catalysts”, “uninhibited energy”, “infectious enthusiasm”, “dissolve tension”, “living embodiments”, “intergenerational knowledge transfer”, “vessels”, “passive recipients”, “bridging generational divides”, “unifying forces”. Theme 3: Cultural Differences and Social Changes
Question 5: How do family gatherings differ between cultures?
🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:
- Dạng: Cross-cultural comparison – cần compare different cultural approaches
- Key words: “differ”, “between cultures” – focus on cultural variations
- Cách tiếp cận: Acknowledge diversity → Compare specific aspects (frequency, formality, activities, values) → Provide examples from different cultures → Explain underlying reasons → Optional: personal observation
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:
Family gatherings are quite different across cultures. In Asian cultures like Vietnam, family gatherings are usually formal and include many relatives. People often gather for important occasions and show respect to elders. But in Western cultures, gatherings might be more casual and focus on immediate family. Also, the food served is different – Asian families prepare traditional dishes while Western families might have different food traditions. The way people interact also varies – some cultures are more reserved while others are more expressive. These differences come from different cultural values and traditions.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Clear comparison structure: Asian vs Western → specific differences (formality, food, interaction) → reason. Basic contrast established.
Family gatherings exhibit remarkable variation across cultures, reflecting fundamentally different values and social structures. To illustrate, in collectivist cultures like those found throughout Asia, family gatherings tend to be elaborate, multi-generational affairs that emphasize hierarchical respect and collective harmony. In Vietnamese culture, for instance, gatherings often involve elaborate preparations, ceremonial elements like ancestor worship, and strict observance of social etiquette – younger members paying respect to elders, specific seating arrangements based on age and status, and formalized gift-giving rituals. These gatherings typically include extended family networks spanning multiple households and can number dozens of people.
In contrast, individualistic Western cultures, particularly in North America and Northern Europe, tend to prioritize more intimate, nuclear family gatherings that are considerably less formal in structure. These events often have a more egalitarian feel, with flatter hierarchies between generations and greater emphasis on individual expression and personal choice. Activities might center around recreational pursuits like barbecues or game nights rather than ritualistic ceremonies. Interestingly, the purpose of gatherings also varies – while Asian gatherings often serve to reinforce family obligations and maintain social bonds as a form of social insurance, Western gatherings might be more focused on celebration and emotional connection without the same level of implied reciprocal obligations.
That being said, these are broad generalizations, and there’s tremendous diversity even within cultural groups. What’s particularly fascinating is observing how immigrant families often blend traditions, creating hybrid gathering styles that incorporate elements from both their heritage culture and their adopted country. Moreover, globalization and increased cultural exchange are gradually blurring some of these distinctions, as people adopt practices from different cultures. The underlying thread, however, is that regardless of cultural form, family gatherings universally serve the fundamental human need for belonging and social connection – they’re just expressed through different cultural lenses.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Sophisticated với introduction acknowledging diversity → detailed analysis of collectivist cultures với specific example (Vietnam) → contrast với individualistic cultures → acknowledgment of generalization limits và cultural blending → unifying conclusion. Demonstrates ability to compare systematically while recognizing complexity.
- Vocabulary: Exceptional range với academic and cultural terminology: “exhibit remarkable variation”, “collectivist cultures”, “hierarchical respect”, “collective harmony”, “elaborate preparations”, “ceremonial elements”, “individualistic cultures”, “egalitarian feel”, “flatter hierarchies”, “ritualistic ceremonies”, “reciprocal obligations”, “immigrant families”, “hybrid gathering styles”, “cultural lenses”. Precise collocations: “strict observance”, “extended family networks”, “reinforcing obligations”, “social insurance”.
- Grammar: Full sophisticated range: passive constructions for academic tone, comparative structures throughout (“more…than”, “considerably less formal”), conditional reasoning, complex sentences với multiple clauses, present continuous for ongoing trends (“are blurring”, “are adopting”), participle phrases.
- Critical Thinking: Outstanding analytical depth với systematic cultural framework (collectivist vs individualistic), specific cultural example (Vietnamese practices), recognition of purpose differences beyond superficial practices, acknowledgment of limitations in generalization, discussion of cultural evolution and hybridization, synthesis identifying universal human needs beneath cultural differences.
💡 Key Language Features:
- Academic framing: “exhibit remarkable variation”, “reflecting fundamentally different”, “To illustrate”, “In contrast” – scholarly approach
- Cultural terminology: “collectivist/individualistic cultures”, “hierarchical respect”, “egalitarian feel”, “hybrid gathering styles” – sophisticated cultural vocabulary
- Hedging appropriately: “tend to be”, “often involve”, “might be”, “these are broad generalizations” – academic caution about cultural statements
- Synthesizing: “The underlying thread”, “universally serve”, “regardless of cultural form” – finding commonality amid diversity
Question 6: Do you think technology has affected family relationships?
🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:
- Dạng: Opinion + Impact analysis (Effect/Consequence) – cần evaluate positive and negative impacts
- Key words: “technology”, “affected”, “family relationships” – focus on causal relationship
- Cách tiếp cận: Direct answer acknowledging complexity → Positive impacts với examples → Negative impacts với examples → Balanced conclusion or personal stance
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:
Yes, technology has definitely affected family relationships in both positive and negative ways. On the positive side, technology helps families stay in touch even when they live far apart. People can use video calls to see their family members anytime. However, technology also has negative effects. Many people spend too much time on their phones during family gatherings instead of talking to each other. Children play games on tablets instead of playing with their cousins. So technology is useful but families need to use it wisely to maintain good relationships.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Clear balanced structure: acknowledgment → positive aspects → negative aspects → conclusion with recommendation. Good use of “On the positive side”, “However”.
- Vocabulary: Adequate với “stay in touch”, “video calls”, “maintain good relationships” nhưng lacks sophisticated terminology về technology’s impact.
- Tại sao Band 6-7: Balanced view presented, relevant examples given, grammar accurate với appropriate cause-effect language, ideas somewhat predictable và lack depth về specific mechanisms of impact, vocabulary functional nhưng not impressive.
📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8-9:
Absolutely, technology has had a profoundly transformative – and I would say deeply ambivalent – effect on family relationships. It’s really a double-edged sword that has both strengthened and weakened family bonds in different ways, often simultaneously.
On the positive side, technology has revolutionized the way geographically separated families maintain connections. Virtual communication platforms have effectively eliminated the barrier of physical distance that would have rendered frequent contact impossible in previous generations. Take, for example, families where members have emigrated or are working abroad – platforms like WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Zoom enable near-constant contact and allow family members to participate virtually in important moments like birthdays or graduations they couldn’t physically attend. During the pandemic, technology proved invaluable in maintaining family connections when in-person gatherings were impossible. From this perspective, technology has been democratizing in that it’s made family connection more accessible and less dependent on geographical proximity or economic resources for travel.
However, the flip side is equally concerning. Technology has introduced a phenomenon sociologists call “phubbing” – phone snubbing – where people prioritize their devices over face-to-face interactions with those physically present. I’ve witnessed countless family gatherings where members are physically together but mentally absent, absorbed in their individual digital worlds rather than engaging with each other. This creates what’s been termed “alone together” – a state where physical proximity doesn’t translate into emotional connection. Perhaps more insidiously, the curated nature of social media can create unrealistic expectations and foster comparison, potentially breeding resentment within families when people contrast their own family lives with idealized portrayals they see online.
What’s particularly nuanced is that technology’s impact often varies by generation. Older generations might leverage technology primarily for practical communication, while younger generations might find that digital communication supplements rather than replaces in-person interaction – or in some cases, unfortunately, the reverse. I’d argue that technology itself is morally neutral – it’s essentially a tool whose impact depends entirely on how intentionally and thoughtfully families choose to use it. The challenge for modern families is striking a balance – harnessing technology’s connective power while maintaining boundaries to ensure it enhances rather than erodes the quality of family relationships. This requires, I think, deliberate effort and agreed-upon norms about technology use during family time, something many families are still figuring out.
Demonstrates sophisticated thinking about multifaceted issue.
- Vocabulary: Outstanding với precise, sophisticated, academic language: “profoundly transformative”, “deeply ambivalent”, “double-edged sword”, “revolutionized”, “geographically separated”, “democratizing”, “phubbing”, “alone together”, “curated nature”, “idealized portrayals”, “morally neutral”, “striking a balance”, “harnessing connective power”. Cultural and sociological terminology: “phenomenon”, “sociologists call”, “foster comparison”, “breeding resentment”.
- Grammar: Full sophisticated range masterfully deployed: relative clauses (“that would have rendered”), perfect infinitives (“to have emigrated”), passive constructions, conditional structures (“depends on how”), participle phrases (“absorbed in”, “breeding”), comparative structures, complex cause-effect relationships, varied sentence structures creating natural rhythm.
- Critical Thinking: Exceptional depth với recognition of paradox và ambivalence, systematic analysis of both positive và negative impacts với equal weight, integration of sociological concepts (“phubbing”, “alone together”), specific examples (pandemic, emigration), generational analysis showing nuanced understanding, philosophical reflection on technology as tool versus human agency, practical implications discussed (need for boundaries, norms), acknowledgment of ongoing evolution (“still figuring out”).
💡 Key Language Features:
- Expressing ambivalence: “deeply ambivalent”, “double-edged sword”, “both strengthened and weakened”, “the flip side” – sophisticated expression of complexity
- Academic references: “sociologists call”, “phenomenon”, “what’s been termed” – integrating academic knowledge
- Causal complexity: “doesn’t translate into”, “can create”, “potentially breeding”, “depends entirely on” – nuanced cause-effect language
- Balancing arguments: “On the positive side…However”, “From this perspective…the flip side”, “supplements rather than replaces” – balanced argumentation

Hãy be yourself, show enthusiasm về topic, và most importantly, enjoy the conversation.
