IELTS Speaking Part 2: Long Turn (Cue Card)

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7
Thời lượng: Khoảng 1 phút 45 giây
I’d like to talk about a time when I made a birthday gift for my best friend last year. It was in June, just before her birthday, and I did it at home in my bedroom.
I worked on this project alone because I wanted it to be a surprise. What I did was create a memory book with photos and stories from our friendship. I collected photos from our school trips and wrote short descriptions for each one. I also decorated the pages with colorful paper and stickers.
The book took me about two weeks to finish because I worked on it in my free time after school. I had to think carefully about which photos to use and what to write. I also made a nice cover with her favorite colors.
I think it was creative because I didn’t just buy a gift from a store. I combined different materials and my own ideas to make something special and personal. Each page was different and told a story about our friendship.
When I gave it to her, she was very happy and said it was the best gift she had ever received. I felt proud of myself because I made something meaningful with my own hands. It showed me that creative gifts are more valuable than expensive ones because they have more thought and effort in them.

📝 Sample Answer – Band 7.5-8
Thời lượng: Khoảng 2 phút 10 giây
I’d like to share an experience that really brought out my creative side. About six months ago, I undertook a project to redesign my younger sister’s bedroom, which turned out to be quite an ambitious endeavor.
The whole thing started in March when my sister mentioned she was feeling uninspired by her room. She’d had the same setup since childhood, and as a teenager now, she wanted something more mature and personalized. We decided to work on this together over a long weekend, though I took the lead on the creative direction.
What made this particularly challenging was our limited budget – we had to work with approximately five million dong. This constraint actually sparked more creativity than if we’d had unlimited resources. I started by scouring online platforms for upcycling ideas and DIY tutorials. We repurposed old furniture by painting it in trendy colors, created a statement wall using washi tape in geometric patterns, and even made floating shelves from reclaimed wood.
I think what made this genuinely creative was the way we transformed limitations into opportunities. Rather than buying everything new, we reimagined existing items and incorporated handmade elements. For instance, we turned old magazines into collage art for the walls and used fairy lights in innovative ways to create ambient lighting. The room went from looking dated and cluttered to modern and spacious without breaking the bank.
For các bạn muốn tìm hiểu thêm về cách xử lý describe a challenging task you completed at work or school, thì dự án này cũng có nhiều điểm tương đồng về kỹ năng giải quyết vấn đề sáng tạo.
The whole experience was incredibly rewarding. Seeing my sister’s face light up when she saw the final result made all the effort worthwhile. Personally, I felt a genuine sense of accomplishment because we’d created something unique and functional within our means. It also reinforced my belief that creativity isn’t about having expensive resources, but rather about thinking innovatively and being willing to experiment with unconventional solutions.

📝 Sample Answer – Band 8.5-9
Thời lượng: 2 phút 40 giây
I’d like to recount what I consider to be one of my most creatively fulfilling experiences – the time I conceptualized and executed a multimedia art installation for my university’s annual cultural festival, which took place last November.
The genesis of this project was somewhat serendipitous. Our art club had been tasked with creating an exhibition piece that would resonate with the theme “Connection in Disconnection,” exploring how technology simultaneously bridges and isolates us. What initially seemed like a daunting challenge became an exhilarating opportunity to push creative boundaries.
I spearheaded the project, though I collaborated closely with three classmates who brought complementary skills – one was proficient in coding, another in traditional sculpture, and the third in sound design. We brainstormed extensively before settling on an interactive installation that merged physical and digital elements. Picture this: we created a room filled with suspended translucent screens displaying real-time data about social media usage, while visitors navigated through tangible sculptures representing human figures reaching out but never quite touching.
What truly elevated this from a simple art project to something genuinely innovative was our interdisciplinary approach. We integrated programming to make the installation responsive – as people moved through the space, sensors would trigger shifts in the visuals and soundscape, making each person’s experience inherently unique. The juxtaposition of cold, digital interfaces with warm, handcrafted sculptures embodied the very paradox we were trying to illuminate.
Tương tự như kinh nghiệm trong describe an art form you would like to learn, việc kết hợp nhiều hình thức nghệ thuật giúp tạo ra những tác phẩm đa chiều và ấn tượng.
The entire endeavor took six weeks of intensive preparation, countless late nights, and numerous iterations before we arrived at a version we were satisfied with. There were moments of frustration when technical glitches threatened to derail the project, but overcoming these obstacles actually strengthened our creative resolve and pushed us to find even more inventive solutions.
The unveiling was nothing short of transformative. Watching visitors engage with our creation, seeing them pause, reflect, and even become visibly emotional, was profoundly gratifying. What struck me most was how people interpreted the installation through their personal lenses – some saw hope for reconnection, others felt a sense of melancholic recognition of our collective isolation.
Personally, this experience crystallized my understanding of what creativity truly entails. It’s not merely about artistic expression but about challenging conventions, synthesizing disparate elements, and creating something that provokes thought and elicits emotional responses. The project validated my belief that the most impactful creative work emerges when we’re willing to venture beyond our comfort zones and embrace the uncertainty inherent in the creative process. It also reinforced the importance of collaboration – bringing together diverse perspectives and skill sets resulted in something far richer and more nuanced than any of us could have achieved individually.

Band 6-7 Answer:
Yes, they did. Many people came to see the exhibition and said nice things about it. Some even took photos to share on social media.
Band 8-9 Answer:
Absolutely, the reception exceeded our expectations. We had a steady stream of visitors throughout the festival, and many lingered longer than we’d anticipated, which suggested genuine engagement. What was particularly gratifying was receiving thoughtful feedback from both peers and faculty members, some of whom incorporated our work into their subsequent lectures on contemporary art.
Question 2: Would you do something similar again?
Band 6-7 Answer:
Yes, I would like to do it again. It was a good experience and I learned a lot from it. Maybe next time I can try different materials or ideas.
Band 8-9 Answer:
Without a doubt, though I’d likely approach it differently armed with the insights I’ve gained. The experience was so enriching that it’s sparked an ongoing interest in installation art. I’m currently exploring ways to create more accessible versions of interactive art that could be deployed in public spaces rather than just galleries, making creative experiences available to broader audiences.
IELTS Speaking Part 3: Two-way Discussion
Sử dụng discourse markers để tạo coherence như “Well”, “Actually”, “From my perspective”, “On the one hand… On the other hand”.
Theme 1: Creativity in Education
Question 1: Do you think schools should encourage more creative thinking?
🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:
- Dạng: Opinion question – yêu cầu quan điểm cá nhân và justification
- Key words: “schools”, “encourage”, “creative thinking” – cần define rõ creative thinking trong educational context
- Cách tiếp cận: Direct answer (Yes/No) → Reason 1 + example → Reason 2 + possible counterargument → Conclusion
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:
Yes, I think schools should encourage creative thinking. It’s important because students need to learn how to solve problems in different ways, not just memorize information. Creative thinking also helps students become more confident and independent. However, schools also need to teach basic knowledge, so there should be a balance between creativity and traditional learning.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Có opinion → reasons → mention balance (good point)
Absolutely, I believe fostering creative thinking should be a cornerstone of modern education. In today’s rapidly evolving world, where many traditional jobs are being automated and new challenges constantly emerge, the ability to think outside the box and generate innovative solutions is becoming increasingly valuable, arguably more so than rote memorization of facts.
From an educational standpoint, encouraging creativity helps students develop critical thinking skills and intellectual flexibility – qualities that are transferable across disciplines. For instance, when students are given open-ended projects rather than rigid assignments, they learn to approach problems from multiple angles and become more comfortable with ambiguity, which is reflective of real-world scenarios.
That said, I think there needs to be a judicious balance. Foundational knowledge in subjects like mathematics and literacy remains essential as it provides the building blocks upon which creative thinking can flourish. The ideal approach would be integrating creative methodologies within traditional subjects rather than treating them as mutually exclusive. Progressive educational systems in countries like Finland have successfully demonstrated that it’s possible to marry structured learning with creative exploration, producing students who are both knowledgeable and innovative.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Well-organized – Direct answer → Reason 1 (modern world context) → Reason 2 (educational benefits) + example → Acknowledgment of counterpoint + balanced conclusion
- Vocabulary: Precise, sophisticated (fostering, cornerstone, rote memorization, judicious balance, mutually exclusive, marry concepts)
- Grammar: Complex structures (In today’s…where…, qualities that are…, when students are given…, rather than treating them as…)
- Critical Thinking: Shows nuanced understanding với balanced view, acknowledges complexity, provides real-world example (Finland)
💡 Key Language Features:
- Discourse markers: Absolutely, From an educational standpoint, That said, rather than
- Tentative language: I believe, arguably, would be (conditional for suggestion)
- Abstract nouns: cornerstone, flexibility, ambiguity, methodologies, exploration
- Academic collocations: fostering creative thinking, transferable across disciplines, reflective of real-world scenarios
Question 2: What is the difference between creativity in children and adults?
🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:
- Dạng: Compare and contrast question
- Key words: “difference”, “creativity”, “children”, “adults”
- Cách tiếp cận: Establish comparison framework → Difference 1 (with explanation) → Difference 2 (with explanation) → Possible reasons for differences
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:
I think children and adults show creativity in different ways. Children are usually more imaginative because they don’t worry about rules or what other people think. They can create stories or draw pictures very freely. Adults, on the other hand, are more practical. Their creativity is often related to their work or solving real problems. Adults have more experience, so their creative ideas might be more useful in real life.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Basic comparison structure với “children are… adults are…”
- Vocabulary: Simple comparative language (more imaginative, more practical)
Well, there are some fascinating distinctions between how creativity manifests in children versus adults, stemming largely from developmental and social factors.
Children’s creativity tends to be more uninhibited and spontaneous. They haven’t yet internalized societal norms or fear of judgment, which allows them to engage in what psychologists call “divergent thinking” – generating multiple unconventional ideas without self-censorship. A child might envision a purple elephant flying through a rainbow without questioning the plausibility. Their creativity is characterized by boundless imagination and a willingness to experiment without concern for practical outcomes.
In contrast, adult creativity is typically more channeled and purposeful. While this might seem like a limitation, it’s actually a different manifestation of creative thinking. Adults bring accumulated knowledge, contextual understanding, and the ability to synthesize complex information to their creative endeavors. Their creativity often manifests as problem-solving, innovation within constraints, or making novel connections between seemingly disparate concepts. An adult designer, for example, must balance creative vision with market demands, technical feasibility, and user needs – a form of “convergent creativity” that’s equally valuable.
Có thể thấy sự khác biệt này rõ nét khi so sánh với describe a recent cultural festival you enjoyed, nơi cả trẻ em và người lớn thể hiện sáng tạo theo những cách riêng biệt.
Interestingly, research suggests that while children may have an advantage in imaginative, unconstrained thinking, adults possess superior executive function that enables them to actually bring creative ideas to fruition. The ideal scenario would be cultivating what some researchers call “adaptive creativity” – retaining the playful experimentation of childhood while leveraging adult analytical capabilities.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Well-organized comparison – Framework → Children’s characteristics + explanation → Adults’ characteristics + explanation → Research-backed insight + synthesis
- Vocabulary: Sophisticated và precise (manifests, uninhibited, self-censorship, divergent thinking, accumulated knowledge, seemingly disparate concepts, bring ideas to fruition)
- Grammar: Full range including relative clauses, participle phrases, complex nominalizations (what psychologists call, the ability to synthesize)
- Critical Thinking: Goes beyond surface comparison, uses psychological concepts, provides balanced analysis, references research, offers synthetic conclusion
💡 Key Language Features:
- Discourse markers: Well, In contrast, Interestingly
- Academic vocabulary: manifests, divergent/convergent thinking, cultivating, leveraging
- Psychological terms: uninhibited, internalized, self-censorship, executive function
- Complex nominalizations: their willingness to experiment, the ability to synthesize, making novel connections
Theme 2: Creativity and Technology
Question 1: How has technology affected people’s creativity?
🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:
- Dạng: Cause-effect / Impact question
- Key words: “technology”, “affected”, “creativity”
- Cách tiếp cận: Acknowledge both positive and negative impacts → Positive effects + examples → Negative effects + examples → Balanced conclusion
📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:
Technology has both helped and hurt creativity. On the positive side, it gives people more tools to be creative. For example, there are many apps for making music, videos, or digital art. People can easily share their work online and get feedback. However, technology can also make people less creative because they spend too much time on social media instead of creating their own things. Also, people might copy ideas they see online instead of thinking of original ideas.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Balanced view (positive and negative) với examples
- Vocabulary: Basic (helped, hurt, tools, copy, original)
Analysis lacks depth về mechanisms and nuances.
📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:
This is quite a nuanced issue because technology’s impact on creativity is decidedly double-edged. On the one hand, digital tools have democratized creative expression in unprecedented ways, lowering the barriers to entry for various artistic endeavors. Consider how software like Photoshop or GarageBand has enabled individuals without formal training to produce professional-quality work. The internet has also created unprecedented opportunities for collaboration across geographical boundaries and exposure to diverse creative influences that can spark innovation.
However, there’s a growing concern that technology may be simultaneously eroding certain aspects of creative thinking. The instant gratification and endless stream of content on platforms like TikTok or Instagram can foster a more passive consumption mindset rather than active creation. Moreover, algorithmic curation tends to create echo chambers that limit exposure to truly novel or challenging ideas. There’s also the phenomenon of homogenization – when everyone uses the same filters, templates, and tools, creative output can start to look disappointingly similar.
From my perspective, the key determinant isn’t technology itself but how we choose to engage with it. Technology is essentially neutral – it can either amplify our creative capabilities or serve as a crutch that diminishes original thinking. The most creatively flourishing individuals tend to be those who use technology as a tool for experimentation rather than a substitute for creative effort, who actively seek out diverse influences rather than passively accepting algorithmic recommendations, and who maintain a balance between digital creation and tangible, hands-on creative practices.

Question 2: Do you think AI will replace human creativity?
🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:
- Dạng: Opinion + Future prediction question
- Key words: “AI”, “replace”, “human creativity”
- Cách tiếp cận: Clear position → Explain what AI can do → Explain what’s uniquely human → Nuanced conclusion
📝 Sample Answer – Band 7-8:
I don’t think AI will completely replace human creativity, although it will change how we create things. AI is very good at analyzing patterns and generating content based on data, like writing articles or creating images. However, human creativity involves emotions, personal experiences, and original thinking that AI cannot truly replicate. AI doesn’t have feelings or understand the deeper meaning behind art. I believe AI will become a tool that helps humans be more creative, but it won’t replace the human element in creativity.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Clear position → AI capabilities → Human uniqueness → Conclusion about AI as tool
- Vocabulary: Good (analyzing patterns, replicate, deeper meaning, human element)
- Tại sao Band 7-8: Well-structured với clear reasoning. Vocabulary good nhưng có thể more sophisticated.
This is one of the most compelling questions of our time, and while I understand the apprehension, I’m inclined to believe that AI will augment rather than supplant human creativity, though the relationship will undoubtedly evolve in complex ways.
To be fair, AI has made remarkable strides in generating creative outputs – from composing music to producing visual art that’s indistinguishable from human-created works. Tools like DALL-E and GPT models can produce content at unprecedented speed and scale. However, I’d argue that what AI produces is more sophisticated mimicry than genuine creativity. It’s recombining and extrapolating from existing patterns in its training data rather than experiencing the authentic spark of inspiration that characterizes human creativity.
What fundamentally distinguishes human creativity is its grounding in lived experience, emotional depth, and what we might call intentionality. When a human artist creates something, it’s imbued with personal meaning, cultural context, and often, a desire to communicate something profound about the human condition. Art that resonates typically does so because it taps into universal human experiences – loss, joy, struggle, hope. AI, lacking consciousness and subjective experience, cannot genuinely understand these dimensions, let alone authentically express them.
Việc kết hợp công nghệ và sáng tạo cũng có thể thấy trong describe a famous documentary you recently watched, nơi kỹ thuật hiện đại được sử dụng để kể chuyện một cách ấn tượng.
That said, I envision AI becoming an increasingly sophisticated collaborator rather than a replacement. Analogous to how calculators didn’t eliminate the need for mathematical thinking but rather freed humans to tackle more complex problems, AI might handle the more mechanical aspects of creative work, enabling humans to focus on the conceptual, emotional, and innovative dimensions. The most exciting creative work of the future will likely emerge from this synergistic relationship – humans leveraging AI’s computational power while providing the irreplaceable elements of vision, meaning, and emotional authenticity.
Ultimately, creativity isn’t just about producing novel outputs – it’s about the why behind creation, the intention, the desire to express, and the capacity to surprise even ourselves. These remain uniquely human attributes that AI, at least in its current conceptualization, cannot authentically replicate.

Theme 3: Creativity in Different Cultures
Question 1: Do you think creativity is valued differently in different cultures?
🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:
- Dạng: Opinion + Cultural comparison question
- Key words: “creativity”, “valued differently”, “different cultures”
- Cách tiếp cận: Acknowledge cultural differences → Provide specific cultural examples → Explain reasons for differences → Balanced conclusion
📝 Sample Answer – Band 7-8:
Yes, I believe different cultures have different attitudes toward creativity. In Western cultures, individual creativity and innovation are highly valued and encouraged. People are praised for being unique and original. However, in many Asian cultures, including Vietnam, there’s traditionally been more emphasis on following established methods and respecting tradition. This doesn’t mean Asian cultures aren’t creative, but creativity might be expressed differently, perhaps more within traditional frameworks. These differences probably come from different educational systems and cultural values about individualism versus collectivism.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Clear position → Western example → Asian example → Explanation of differences
- Vocabulary: Appropriate (individual creativity, innovation, established methods, collectivism)
- Tại sao Band 7-8: Shows cultural awareness và balanced comparison. Analysis is good nhưng có thể more nuanced về các factors và examples cụ thể hơn.
📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:
Absolutely, and I’d argue that these differences are quite profound, stemming from deeply ingrained cultural values and historical contexts that shape not only how creativity is perceived but also how it’s encouraged, expressed, and rewarded.
In broadly Western contexts, particularly in countries like the United States, there’s a strong cultural emphasis on individual innovation and disruptive creativity – the kind that challenges existing paradigms. This is reflected in everything from educational approaches that prioritize critical thinking and questioning authority to business cultures that celebrate entrepreneurship and risk-taking. The archetypal lone genius or maverick innovator is a recurring motif in Western narratives.
Conversely, many East Asian cultures, while equally creative, have traditionally framed creativity somewhat differently. In Japan, for instance, there’s the concept of “kaizen” – continuous, incremental improvement within established systems. Creativity here is manifested as refinement and perfection rather than radical departure. Similarly, in Chinese artistic traditions, mastery often involves spending years replicating classical works before developing one’s own style – a process that might seem antithetical to Western notions of originality but which actually cultivates a deep understanding that enables sophisticated innovation.
Những khía cạnh văn hóa này cũng được thể hiện rõ trong describe a time when you felt proud of your accomplishments, khi cách chúng ta đánh giá thành tựu sáng tạo phụ thuộc vào bối cảnh văn hóa.
These differences can be traced to various factors, including collectivist versus individualist orientations, educational philosophies (rote learning versus discovery-based learning), and even economic structures. However, it’s crucial to avoid oversimplification – these are general tendencies rather than absolute distinctions, and we’re increasingly seeing a cross-pollination of ideas as globalization facilitates cultural exchange.
Moreover, I’d suggest that no single approach is inherently superior. Western-style disruptive innovation has driven technological breakthroughs, but East Asian attention to detail and incremental refinement has produced exceptionally high-quality products and services. The most dynamic creative environments today often integrate elements from multiple cultural approaches, recognizing that creativity can manifest in myriad ways, each with its own merit and applicability depending on context.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Exceptionally well-organized – Position → Western approach with examples → East Asian approach with specific concepts → Analysis of underlying factors → Nuanced conclusion avoiding stereotypes
- Vocabulary: Highly sophisticated (ingrained, disruptive, archetypal, antithetical to, cross-pollination, myriad ways)
- Grammar: Full range (passive constructions for academic tone, complex embeddings, parallel structures)

Question 2: How can people from different cultures learn from each other creatively?
🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:
- Dạng: How question – solutions/methods
- Key words: “people”, “different cultures”, “learn from each other”, “creatively”
- Cách tiếp cận: Multiple methods with examples → Benefits of each → Potential challenges → Optimistic conclusion
📝 Sample Answer – Band 7-8:
There are several ways people from different cultures can learn creatively from each other. First, international collaborations in art, music, or business can bring together different perspectives and create innovative results. For example, fusion music combines elements from different cultures to create new styles. Second, cultural exchange programs and studying abroad expose people to different creative traditions and ways of thinking. Social media and the internet also make it easier for people to share creative work globally and get inspired by different cultures. The key is being open-minded and respectful of different approaches to creativity.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Multiple methods → Examples → Conclusion about mindset
- Vocabulary: Good (international collaborations, fusion, cultural exchange, open-minded)
Well, there are numerous pathways for cross-cultural creative exchange, and I believe we’re living in an era where these opportunities are more accessible than ever, though realizing their full potential requires both intentionality and cultural sensitivity.
One particularly powerful mechanism is collaborative projects that deliberately bring together diverse cultural perspectives. When people with different cultural lenses work together, they challenge each other’s assumptions and approach problems from angles that wouldn’t have been evident to a homogeneous group. We see this playing out beautifully in fields like architecture, where cross-cultural design teams create spaces that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. The Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by a French architect in dialogue with Emirati culture, exemplifies this synergistic approach.
Cultural immersion through residency programs, exchange initiatives, or even extended travel offers another avenue. When creators embed themselves in different cultural contexts, they don’t just observe superficial differences but begin to internalize alternative ways of thinking and seeing the world. Many renowned artists and writers credit such experiences with fundamentally transforming their creative practice. The key is moving beyond cultural tourism toward genuine engagement and humility.
Digital platforms have also revolutionized possibilities for cross-cultural learning. Online collaborative tools enable real-time cooperation across continents, while platforms like YouTube or Instagram expose creators to artistic traditions they might never encounter otherwise. However, there’s a caveat here – algorithmic curation can actually limit exposure to truly different perspectives, so active curation of one’s creative influences becomes important.
That said, effective cross-cultural creative exchange requires navigating some potential pitfalls. There’s a fine line between cultural appreciation and appropriation – borrowing superficial elements without understanding or respecting their deeper significance can be problematic. The most ethical and productive exchanges happen when there’s mutual respect, reciprocity, and an acknowledgment of power dynamics and historical contexts.
Ultimately, I believe the greatest benefit of cross-cultural creative learning isn’t just producing more innovative work, though that’s certainly valuable. It’s about cultivating what some scholars call “cultural humility” – recognizing that our own creative traditions, however rich, represent only one facet of human creative potential. This mindset opens us up to continuous learning and helps combat the parochialism that can stifle creativity. In an increasingly interconnected world, this cross-cultural creative fluency isn’t just beneficial – it’s becoming essential.
Phân tích:
- Structure: Masterful organization – Multiple methods each fully developed (collaboration, immersion, digital) → Challenges/ethical considerations → Philosophical conclusion
- Vocabulary: Exceptional range (pathways, cultural lenses, embed themselves, algorithmic curation, appropriation vs appreciation, parochialism, cultural humility)
- Grammar: Full mastery với variety of complex structures, academic passive voice, sophisticated conditionals
- Critical Thinking: Shows deep understanding, provides concrete examples (Louvre Abu Dhabi), acknowledges ethical dimensions, balances optimism with realism, provides philosophical framework
💡 Key Language Features:

- Tentative language: I believe, can be problematic, isn’t just…it’s about
- Academic vocabulary: mechanisms, synergistic, reciprocity, parochialism, facet of human potential
- Ethical/philosophical language: cultural sensitivity, appropriation vs appreciation, power dynamics, cultural humility
