📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7

Thời lượng: Khoảng 1.5-2 phút

“I’d like to talk about my uncle, Mr. Thanh, who is very disciplined in his work. I’ve known him since I was a child because he’s my father’s younger brother.

My uncle works as a high school teacher in Hanoi. He teaches Mathematics and is also the head of the Math department. He has been working at this school for about 15 years now.

I think he is very disciplined because he has a very strict routine. Every day, he wakes up at 5:30 AM to prepare his lessons. He always arrives at school 30 minutes before his first class starts. He never misses a class unless he’s really sick. My uncle also spends time every evening checking students’ homework and preparing materials for the next day.

Another reason why I think he’s disciplined is that he keeps learning new teaching methods. He attends training courses every summer holiday to improve his skills. He also reads many books about education.

I really admire my uncle because his discipline has helped him become one of the best teachers in his school. Many students respect him and his students always get good results in exams. His disciplined approach to work has taught me that being consistent and hardworking is important for success.”

📝 Sample Answer – Band 7.5-8

Thời lượng: Khoảng 2-2.5 phút

“I’d like to talk about my former colleague, Linda, who I consider to be one of the most disciplined professionals I’ve ever worked with. We were teammates at a digital marketing agency in Ho Chi Minh City for about three years.

Linda worked as a senior project manager, overseeing multiple client accounts simultaneously. Her role involved coordinating between different teams, managing deadlines, and ensuring that all projects were delivered on time and within budget. It was quite a demanding position, especially during peak seasons when we handled up to 20 projects at once.

What made Linda exceptionally disciplined was her systematic approach to everything. She had this meticulous planning system where she would break down each project into smaller, manageable tasks and assign specific deadlines to each. Every morning, she’d arrive at the office at least 30 minutes early to review her schedule and prioritize her workload. She was also incredibly consistent – I never saw her miss a deadline or come unprepared to a meeting.

Another aspect of her discipline was her commitment to professional development. Despite her busy schedule, Linda dedicated at least one hour every week to learning new project management tools and industry trends. She’d often share useful resources with the team during our weekly meetings.

The reason I find her so disciplined is that she maintained this level of consistency even during stressful periods. While many of us would occasionally let things slide when overwhelmed, Linda always stuck to her principles. Her discipline created a ripple effect throughout the team – we all became more organized and efficient because of her example. I believe her unwavering work ethic was the key factor that helped our team achieve a 95% client satisfaction rate, which was the highest in the company.”

📝 Sample Answer – Band 8.5-9

Thời lượng: 2.5-3 phút đầy đủ

“I’d like to tell you about my father, who I’d describe as the embodiment of discipline in both his professional and personal life. He’s been a civil engineer for nearly 30 years, currently working as a senior consultant for a major infrastructure development firm in Vietnam.

My father specializes in designing and overseeing the construction of bridges and highways. What makes his job particularly challenging is that it requires meticulous attention to detail – a single miscalculation could have catastrophic consequences. He’s responsible for coordinating with government agencies, contractors, and his own team of engineers, which involves juggling multiple responsibilities simultaneously while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.

What truly sets him apart in terms of discipline is his unwavering commitment to a structured routine that he’s maintained for decades. Without fail, he rises at 5 AM, even on weekends, to review project documents and stay ahead of schedule. He has this remarkable ability to compartmentalize different aspects of his work – he’ll allocate specific time blocks for site inspections, client meetings, and technical reviews, and he adheres to this schedule religiously. I’ve witnessed him turn down social invitations numerous times simply because they’d interfere with his planned work hours.

But what I find most impressive is how his discipline extends beyond mere time management. He has this deeply ingrained habit of double-checking everything – whether it’s a minor calculation or a major design decision. He often says that in his field, there’s no room for complacency, and this philosophy has become second nature to him. He also makes it a point to continuously update his knowledge, dedicating several hours each month to studying new engineering standards and technologies, despite having decades of experience under his belt.

The reason I’m so in awe of his discipline is the tangible impact it’s had. Throughout his career, he’s completed over 50 major projects, and remarkably, not a single one has experienced significant structural issues or delays – a track record that’s almost unheard of in the construction industry. His methodical approach has earned him numerous awards and, more importantly, has saved countless lives by ensuring the safety of the infrastructure he designs.

On a personal level, his discipline has profoundly shaped my own work ethic. Growing up, I observed how his consistent habits and refusal to cut corners led to extraordinary results. It taught me that discipline isn’t about rigid adherence to rules, but rather about having the inner strength to maintain high standards even when no one’s watching. His example has shown me that true discipline is what separates good professionals from exceptional ones, and it’s a lesson that I carry with me in my own career journey.”

Question 1: Do you think you will be as disciplined as this person in the future?

Band 8-9 Answer:
“I certainly aspire to reach that level of discipline, though I recognize it’s a gradual process. I’ve already started implementing some of his strategies, like time-blocking and maintaining a consistent routine. That said, I think discipline is something you continuously refine rather than something you achieve overnight, so I’m committed to the journey rather than fixating on a specific endpoint.”

Question 2: Is it difficult to maintain such a high level of discipline?

Band 6-7 Answer:
“Yes, I think it’s very difficult. You need to have strong willpower and really want to succeed. Many people start but can’t continue.”

Band 8-9 Answer:
“It’s undeniably challenging, especially in today’s world where we’re constantly bombarded with distractions. I think the difficulty lies not in making disciplined choices occasionally, but in sustaining them over time. From what I’ve observed, people who maintain long-term discipline typically have intrinsic motivation – they’re driven by deeply held values rather than external pressures. It also helps to build support systems and accountability mechanisms, which make the process more manageable.”

💡 Analysis: Band 8-9 answer identifies root causes (intrinsic motivation, deeply held values), acknowledges modern challenges (distractions), và provides solutions (support systems, accountability).

Các Câu Hỏi Thảo Luận Sâu

Theme 1: Workplace Discipline and Productivity

Question 1: Why do you think some people are more disciplined than others in their work?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Cause-Effect (Why) – yêu cầu analyze reasons/factors
  • Key words: “some people”, “more disciplined” – so sánh
  • Cách tiếp cận: Identify 2-3 main factors (upbringing, personality, motivation) + explain each + examples

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“I think there are several reasons. First, it depends on their personality. Some people are naturally more organized and like to plan things. Second, their family background is important. If parents teach children to be disciplined from young age, they will carry this habit to their work. Finally, their motivation also matters. People who have clear goals usually work harder and are more disciplined than those who don’t know what they want.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Good – có 3 reasons với clear signposting (First, Second, Finally)
  • Vocabulary: Adequate nhưng simple (naturally, family background, clear goals)
  • Tại sao Band 6-7: Clear communication với logical organization, nhưng thiếu sophisticated vocabulary, examples cụ thể, và deeper analysis

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

“Well, I believe discipline in the workplace is shaped by a combination of factors, both intrinsic and external.

From a psychological perspective, some individuals are simply wired differently – they may have higher levels of conscientiousness, which is one of the Big Five personality traits. These people tend to be naturally detail-oriented and goal-driven, making discipline feel more like a default setting than a constant struggle.

However, nature isn’t everythingnurture plays a crucial role as well. People who grew up in environments where structure and accountability were emphasized often internalize these values early on. For instance, children whose parents instilled routines and rewarded consistent effort are more likely to replicate these patterns in their professional lives.

Equally important is one’s sense of purpose. When people find their work intrinsically meaningful, discipline becomes less about forcing themselves and more about natural momentum. I’ve noticed that professionals who are passionate about their field rarely struggle with discipline because they’re intrinsically motivated rather than just chasing external rewards.

That said, we shouldn’t overlook environmental factors either. A supportive work culture, clear expectations, and tangible consequences for performance can significantly influence how disciplined someone appears. Sometimes what looks like a personality difference is actually a response to different workplace contexts.”

  • Sophisticated verbs: shaped by, wired differently, instilled routines, replicate patterns, internalize values

  • Cách tiếp cận: Present both sides → Personal stance with conditions → Nuanced conclusion

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“I don’t think companies should be too strict because it can make employees stressed and unhappy. If the rules are too hard, people might not want to work there. However, some discipline is necessary to make sure everyone does their job properly. So I think companies should find a balance between being strict and being flexible. They should have rules but not make them too difficult to follow.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Có both sides nhưng development yếu
  • Vocabulary: Basic (too strict, stressed, unhappy, flexible)
  • Tại sao Band 6-7: Có cố show balance nhưng lacks sophistication và specific examples

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8-5-9:

“This is quite a nuanced question, and I don’t think there’s a one-size-fits-all answer. It really depends on the nature of the industry and the organizational culture a company wants to foster.

On the one hand, certain sectors genuinely require stringent discipline for safety and operational reasons. Take manufacturing plants or healthcare facilities, for example, where deviation from protocols could have life-threatening consequences. In these contexts, strict adherence to procedures isn’t just about control – it’s about risk mitigation and ensuring consistent quality standards.

On the other hand, overly rigid discipline can be counterproductive, especially in creative industries or roles that require innovation. When employees feel micromanaged or constrained by excessive rules, it can stifle creativity and erode morale. There’s substantial research showing that autonomy and trust-based cultures often yield better results than command-and-control approaches, particularly among knowledge workers.

From my perspective, the key lies in striking a balance between accountability and flexibility. Rather than imposing blanket strict rules, forward-thinking companies are moving toward outcome-based frameworks where employees have autonomy over how they achieve goals but are held accountable for results. This approach fosters intrinsic discipline rather than forcing compliance through fear.

Moreover, I think companies should focus on cultivating a culture where discipline emerges organically from shared values and mutual respect, rather than being imposed from above. When people understand the rationale behind policies and feel psychologically invested in the organization’s success, they’re more likely to self-regulate without needing constant supervision.”

Question 3: How has technology affected people’s discipline at work?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: How (Effect/Impact) + Present Perfect (ongoing change)
  • Key words: “technology”, “affected discipline” – có thể positive hoặc negative
  • Cách tiếp cận: Acknowledge both positive and negative impacts → Examples → Trend analysis

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“Technology has both good and bad effects on work discipline. On the positive side, we have many apps and tools that help us organize our work better, like calendars and task management software. These make it easier to remember deadlines and stay organized.

However, technology also creates problems. People spend too much time on social media and get distracted easily. Many workers check their phones constantly during work hours, which reduces their productivity. So I think technology is a double-edged sword – it can help or hurt discipline depending on how we use it.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Có both sides (positive & negative)
  • Vocabulary: Basic expressions (good and bad effects, double-edged sword – cliché)
  • Tại sao Band 6-7: Clear message nhưng lacks depth, specific examples, và sophisticated analysis

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

“Technology’s impact on workplace discipline is really a double-edged phenomenon that manifests in paradoxical ways.

On the positive spectrum, digital tools have revolutionized how we approach work organization. Project management platforms like Asana or Trello, for instance, have made task tracking and collaborative discipline more transparent and accessible than ever before. Automated reminders, time-tracking software, and productivity analytics provide real-time feedback that helps people stay on course. In many ways, technology has democratized access to organizational tools that were once only available to large corporations.

However, the flip side is equally significant. We’re now dealing with what psychologists call continuous partial attention – the constant pull of notifications, emails, and digital interruptions that fragment our focus. The very devices meant to enhance productivity can become sources of procrastination. Social media, instant messaging, and the endless scroll of digital content have created unprecedented levels of distraction that require tremendous self-regulation to manage.

What’s particularly interesting is how technology has blurred the boundaries between work and personal life. Remote work tools and constant connectivity mean people are technically available around the clock, which sounds like increased discipline but often leads to burnout and diminished quality of work rather than sustained focus.

Looking at emerging trends, I think we’re witnessing a pendulum swing where both individuals and organizations are becoming more intentional about technology use. There’s growing awareness around digital wellness and attention management. Some companies are now implementing tech-free hours or encouraging deep work blocks where notifications are disabled. This suggests that the future of workplace discipline might lie in strategic technology use rather than blanket adoption or complete rejection.”

  • Dạng: Describe + Compare (most discipline)
  • Key words: “in your country” – cần cultural context, “most discipline” – superlative
  • Cách tiếp cận: Identify 2-3 professions → Explain why each requires discipline → Compare

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“In Vietnam, I think doctors and teachers need a lot of discipline. Doctors have to work long hours and be very careful because people’s lives depend on them. They need to keep studying new medical knowledge too. Teachers also need discipline because they have to prepare lessons, grade papers, and manage students. Both jobs require patience and commitment. I think these jobs need more discipline than office jobs because the responsibility is bigger.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Identifies 2 professions với basic reasons
  • Vocabulary: Simple (a lot of, very careful, keep studying)
  • Tại sao Band 6-7: Answers the question nhưng lacks depth, specific examples from Vietnamese context, và sophisticated comparison

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

“In the Vietnamese context, I’d say several professions stand out for requiring exceptional discipline, though for different reasons.

At the top of the list would be healthcare professionals, particularly surgeons and emergency room doctors. In Vietnam’s overburdened public health system, these individuals often work grueling 24-hour shifts in under-resourced conditions. The discipline required goes beyond just showing up – it involves maintaining precision and making critical decisions when physically exhausted. What makes this particularly demanding in Vietnam is that doctors often juggle public hospital duties with private practice just to make ends meet, requiring extraordinary time management and stamina.

Equally demanding, though in different ways, are roles in manufacturing and quality control within Vietnam’s export-oriented industries – textiles, electronics, footwear. Workers in these sectors must adhere to stringent international standards with zero tolerance for error. A friend who manages a garment factory told me that inspectors check thousands of stitches daily, and a single defect can jeopardize an entire shipment contract. This level of sustained attention to detail, day after day, requires remarkable discipline.

I’d also mention traffic police and front-line teachers in Vietnam. Traffic police work in hazardous conditions – standing in intense heat and heavy pollution for hours – while maintaining composure despite constant stress. Teachers, particularly in rural areas, often teach multiple grades in under-equipped schools while supplementing their income through extra classes, which demands both pedagogical discipline and personal sacrifice.

What distinguishes these professions from typical office work in Vietnam is the combination of high stakes, resource constraints, and societal expectations. While an office worker might have flexibility in how they manage tasks, these professionals must maintain unwavering standards in less-than-ideal circumstances, which I believe represents the highest form of workplace discipline.”

Theme 3: Discipline and Success

Question 5: Do you think discipline is the most important factor for career success?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: Opinion + Extent (most important) – yêu cầu evaluate và compare
  • Key words: “most important” – superlative, cần so sánh với other factors
  • Cách tiếp cận: Acknowledge importance → Identify other factors → Provide balanced conclusion

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“Discipline is very important for success, but I don’t think it’s the only thing that matters. Other things like talent, education, and luck also play a role. For example, someone can be very disciplined but if they don’t have the right skills or opportunities, they might not succeed. So I think discipline is one important factor, but we need a combination of many things to be successful in our career.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Balanced view nhưng superficial
  • Vocabulary: Basic (very important, play a role, right skills)
  • Tại sao Band 6-7: Covers main points nhưng lacks development và sophisticated analysis

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

“While I’d certainly rank discipline among the top factors for career success, I don’t think it’s accurate to call it the single most important element. Success, as I see it, is typically the result of a complex interplay of multiple variables.

Discipline is undeniably foundational – it’s what enables people to show up consistently, push through obstacles, and compound small improvements over time. There’s actually a concept in psychology called the “compounding effect” which suggests that modest daily efforts, sustained through discipline, yield exponential results over years. This is particularly evident in fields like medicine, law, or academia, where long-term commitment is non-negotiable.

However, discipline in isolation has its limitations. I’d argue that strategic thinking is equally crucial – the ability to identify leverage points and allocate effort wisely. Someone who works 16-hour days in the wrong direction will be outperformed by someone who works strategically for 8 hours. This is where intelligence, creativity, and adaptability come into play.

Beyond individual factors, we can’t ignore structural elements like social capital, access to opportunities, and what sociologists call “cultural capital” – the networks, knowledge, and resources one has access to. Two equally disciplined individuals might have vastly different trajectories based on their starting positions and connections.

What I find most compelling is research suggesting that the optimal formula varies by field. In creative industries, discipline might need to be balanced with spontaneity and risk-taking. In highly regulated professions, technical expertise and discipline might be more weighted. In entrepreneurship, resilience and networking ability might sometimes trump pure discipline.

My take is that discipline serves as a multiplier rather than a standalone factor. It amplifies whatever talents, opportunities, and strategies you have. A disciplined person with mediocre advantages will likely outperform a talented but undisciplined person over time, but the ideal scenario combines discipline with other success factors. It’s less about discipline being most important and more about it being the glue that holds all other factors together.”

Question 6: How can parents teach children to be more disciplined?

🎯 Phân tích câu hỏi:

  • Dạng: How (Methods/Strategies)
  • Key words: “parents teach children” – education, upbringing
  • Cách tiếp cận: Identify specific methods → Explain effectiveness → Acknowledge challenges

📝 Sample Answer – Band 6-7:

“Parents can teach discipline in several ways. First, they should set a good example because children learn by watching their parents. If parents are disciplined, children will copy them. Second, parents should make rules and be consistent with them. For example, if children must do homework before watching TV, parents should enforce this rule every day. Finally, parents should explain why discipline is important, not just punish children. This helps children understand the value of being disciplined.”

Phân tích:

  • Structure: Clear with 3 methods (example, rules, explanation)
  • Vocabulary: Simple but adequate (set example, make rules, enforce)
  • Tại sao Band 6-7: Practical suggestions nhưng lacks depth, psychological insights, và sophisticated language

📝 Câu trả lời mẫu – Band 8.5-9:

“This is such a crucial question because early childhood experiences often lay the groundwork for lifelong habits. I think effective approaches operate on multiple levels.

The most powerful method, in my view, is modeling – children are incredibly perceptive and absorb behaviors far more than verbal instructions. When parents demonstrate discipline in their own lives – whether it’s maintaining routines, following through on commitments, or delaying gratification – children internalize these patterns almost osmotically. This is supported by social learning theory, which emphasizes observation as a primary learning mechanism.

Beyond modeling, I think creating structured environments is essential. This doesn’t mean rigid control but rather establishing predictable routines and clear boundaries that provide a sense of security. For instance, consistent bedtimes, designated homework hours, and regular family meals create a framework within which children can develop self-regulation skills. The key is consistency – children need to see that expectations remain stable, not arbitrary.

What’s equally important is teaching the why, not just the what. Progressive parents are now focusing on intrinsic motivation rather than external enforcement. Instead of simply demanding “do your homework,” they engage children in conversations about long-term goals, cause and effect, and personal responsibility. This cultivates internal discipline rather than mere compliance.

However, I think we need to acknowledge the fine line between teaching discipline and stifling autonomy. Research in developmental psychology suggests that overly controlling parenting can actually backfire, leading to either rebellion or dependence. The sweet spot seems to be what psychologists call “authoritative parenting” – combining high expectations with emotional support and reasonable autonomy.

In the Vietnamese context specifically, there’s often a tension between traditional strict approaches and modern emphasis on self-direction. I believe the optimal approach might be culturally adaptive – respecting values of respect and hard work while incorporating age-appropriate autonomy and intrinsic motivation strategies. Perhaps teaching discipline through collaborative goal-setting rather than unilateral rule enforcement represents a middle path that honors both perspectives.”

Grammatical Structures Ấn Tượng

1. Conditional Sentences (Câu điều kiện):

Mixed Conditional:

  • Formula: If + past perfect, would/could + base verb (present result of past condition)
  • Ví dụ: If my father hadn’t instilled discipline in me early on, I wouldn’t be where I am today in my career.
  • Khi nào dùng: Nói về past action và present consequence

Inversion (Đảo ngữ):

  • Formula: Had + subject + past participle, subject + would have…
  • Ví dụ: Had she been less disciplined, she would have missed numerous important deadlines.
  • Khi nào dùng: Formal style, thay cho standard conditional

2. Relative Clauses (Mệnh đề quan hệ):

Non-defining relative clauses:

  • Formula: , which/who + clause,
  • Ví dụ: My colleague, who is incredibly disciplined, manages five projects simultaneously.
  • Lưu ý: Có dấu phẩy, cung cấp extra information

Reduced relative clauses:

  • Formula: Noun + V-ing/V-ed
  • Ví dụ: People working in healthcare require exceptional discipline. (= who work)
  • Khi nào dùng: Làm câu ngắn gọn hơn, sophisticated hơn

3. Passive Voice (Câu bị động):

Impersonal passive (It is thought/believed/said that…):

  • Formula: It is + past participle + that + clause
  • Ví dụ:
    • It is widely believed that discipline is crucial for long-term success.
    • It has been proven that consistent routines improve productivity.
  • Khi nào dùng: Khi muốn sound objective, academic

4. Cleft Sentences (Câu chẻ):

What-cleft:

  • Formula: What + subject + verb + is/was + focus
  • Ví dụ: What I find most impressive about her is her unwavering commitment to quality.
  • Khi nào dùng: Emphasize một phần cụ thể của câu

The thing that-cleft:

  • Formula: The thing/reason/person that… is…
  • Ví dụ: The thing that sets disciplined people apart is their consistency over time.
  • Khi nào dùng: Highlight specific aspect

5. Advanced Linking (Nối câu nâng cao):

Despite/In spite of + gerund/noun:

  • Ví dụ: Despite having a busy schedule, she maintains strict discipline.

While/Whereas (contrast):

  • Ví dụ: While some people rely on external motivation, disciplined individuals have intrinsic drive.

Participle clauses:

  • Ví dụ: Having worked in the industry for decades, he understands the importance of discipline.

6. Emphasizing Structures:

Not only… but also:

  • Ví dụ: Discipline not only helps with time management but also builds character.

It is… that/who (cleft for emphasis):

  • Ví dụ: It is his discipline that enabled him to achieve such remarkable results.

  • Dùng quá nhiều “and then, and then, and then” → Monotonous
  • Pause ở sai chỗ (giữa subject và verb) → Awkward

💡 Tip từ Examiner:
Hãy pause SAU discourse markers (Well…[pause], Actually…[pause]), KHÔNG pause giữa các thành phần quan trọng của câu.

📚 Lexical Resource (25%):

  • KHÔNG phải nhồi nhét big words không phù hợp
  • MÀ LÀ sử dụng vocabulary precise, natural collocations, paraphrasing tốt
  • Range AND appropriacy đều quan trọng

Ví dụ thực tế tôi gặp:

  • ❌ Thí sinh nói: “He is very magnanimous in his work discipline” (sai context – magnanimous = rộng lượng, không liên quan discipline)
  • ✅ Nên nói: “He demonstrates unwavering commitment to his work”

Lỗi phổ biến:

  • Học thuộc big words nhưng không biết dùng đúng context
  • Lặp từ “very”, “really”, “good” quá nhiều

  • Band 8-9: Natural mix, complex sentences mostly error-free

Lỗi phổ biến của học viên Việt Nam:

  • Dùng quá nhiều simple sentences: “He is disciplined. He wakes up early. He works hard.”
  • Hoặc ngược lại: cố nhồi quá nhiều clauses vào một câu → confusing
  • Lỗi về articles (a/an/the) và prepositions

💡 Tip từ Examiner:
Aim for 60% simple/compound sentences, 40% complex. Quality over quantity!

🎙️ Pronunciation (25%):

  • KHÔNG phải accent như native speaker
  • MÀ LÀ clear, understandable, với word stress và sentence stress đúng
  • Intonation tự nhiên (not robotic)

Điều thí sinh Việt Nam cần cải thiện:

  • Word stress: DIScipline (không phải disCIPline)
  • Sentence stress: nhấn vào content words, không nhấn vào every word
  • Intonation: voice đi xuống ở end của statements, đi lên ở yes/no questions

💡 Tip từ Examiner:
Record yourself và listen back. Bạn có sound natural không? Hay sound like you’re reading?

Chiến thuật cụ thể cho từng Part

Part 1: Be Natural and Personable

Do:

  • Smile và establish eye contact
  • Extend answers to 2-3 câu (not just yes/no)
  • Add personal examples
  • Use conversational discourse markers

Don’t:

  • Give one-word answers
  • Sound rehearsed/memorized
  • Overthink – just be yourself
  • Use overly formal language

Sample approach:

  • Question: “Do you consider yourself disciplined?”
  • ❌ Weak: “Yes, I am disciplined.”
  • ✅ Strong: “Well, I’d say I’m reasonably disciplined, especially when it comes to work. I stick to a morning routine most days, though I do allow myself some flexibility on weekends.”

Part 2: Structure + Specificity

Golden rule: STAR method

  • Situation: Who and context
  • Task: What they do
  • Action: Specific examples of discipline
  • Result: Impact/why impressive

Do:

  • Use ALL of your 1 minute prep time
  • Note keywords only (not sentences)
  • Cover all bullet points
  • Speak for full 2 minutes
  • Give SPECIFIC examples (numbers, names, situations)

Don’t:

  • Write full sentences in prep time
  • Memorize and recite a template
  • Give vague general descriptions
  • Stop after 1 minute

Prep note example cho “disciplined person”:

- Dad - civil engineer (30 yrs)
- 5AM routine - review docs
- Time-blocking meetings/site visits
- Double-check EVERYTHING
- 50+ projects - no delays
- Impact on me

Part 3: Think Deeply and Show Range

Structure mỗi answer:

  1. Direct answer (1 câu)
  2. Reason 1 + example (2-3 câu)
  3. Reason 2 + example/alternative view (2-3 câu)
  4. Conclusion/Nuance (1-2 câu)

Do:

  • Think aloud: “That’s an interesting question… Let me think…”
  • Show multiple perspectives
  • Use examples from society (not just personal)
  • Acknowledge complexity
  • Use tentative language

Don’t:

  • Give short answers
  • Only talk about yourself
  • Be absolute (“always”, “never”)
  • Memorize answers to predicted questions

Example structure:

  • Q: “Is discipline the most important factor for success?”
  • Direct: “While discipline is certainly crucial, I wouldn’t call it the single most important factor.”
  • Reason 1: “Discipline provides the consistency needed…” [+ example]
  • Reason 2: “However, strategic thinking is equally important…” [+ example]
  • Nuance: “I think the optimal formula varies by field…”

    • Q: “Why are some people more disciplined?”
    • Weak answer: Nói về discipline quan trọng như thế nào (không answer “why”)

Giải pháp: Luôn identify question type (Why/How/Do you think/Compare) và answer directly trước

🚫 Lỗi 3: Vocabulary Showing Off

  • Vấn đề: Dùng từ cao siêu không phù hợp context
  • Ví dụ: “He is very perspicacious in maintaining discipline” (perspicacious = sáng suốt, nhạy bén – weird trong context này)

Giải pháp: Chỉ dùng từ bạn 100% chắc chắn về meaning và usage

🚫 Lỗi 4: Grammar Overcomplication

  • Vấn đề: Cố nhồi quá nhiều grammar structures vào một câu
  • Ví dụ: “The person who I’m going to talk about, which is my father, who has been working as an engineer, which requires discipline…”

Giải pháp: Một complex structure per sentence là đủ

🚫 Lỗi 5: Không sử dụng hết thời gian

  • Part 2: Nói dưới 1.5 phút → Fluency score giảm
  • Part 3: Answers quá ngắn → không demonstrate range

Giải pháp: Practice với timer, aim for 2+ phút Part 2, 30-45 giây mỗi Part 3 answer

Lộ trình chuẩn bị hiệu quả

📅 4 tuần trước thi:

Tuần 1: Build Foundation

  • Học vocabulary theo themes (100-150 từ)
  • Practice pronunciation của từng từ
  • Record và listen back
  • Mục tiêu: Làm quen với topic vocabulary

Tuần 2: Structure Practice

  • Tập structure câu trả lời Part 1 (2-3 câu mỗi answer)
  • Practice Part 2 với timer (aim for exactly 2 minutes)
  • Học discourse markers và practice naturally
  • Mục tiêu: Build confidence với structure

Tuần 3: Fluency Development

  • Practice nói về các topics liên quan không chuẩn bị trước
  • Record full mock tests
  • Analyze hesitations và repetitions
  • Work on grammar range
  • Mục tiêu: Reduce hesitation, increase flexibility

Tuần 4: Fine-tuning

  • 3-4 full mock tests với examiner hoặc teacher
  • Review recordings và identify patterns
  • Focus vào pronunciation và intonation
  • Prepare cho common Part 3 themes
  • Mục tiêu: Exam readiness

📝 Daily Practice Plan (30-45 phút/ngày):

  • 10 phút: Vocabulary review (flashcards, collocations)
  • 15 phút: Topic practice (record answers)
  • 10 phút: Listen back và self-correction
  • 10 phút: Grammar/pronunciation drills

💡 Lời khuyên cuối:
Discipline trong học IELTS cũng quan trọng như discipline bạn miêu tả trong bài thi! Consistent daily practice beats cramming. Good luck!
