Q: “Are you satisfied with your current job?”
A: “Well, to be honest, if I had chosen a different major at university, I would probably be working in a more creative field now. But overall, I’m quite content with my current position.”
Q: “Do you think you’ll stay in your hometown?”
A: “Actually, if my family weren’t all based here, I would have moved to Ho Chi Minh City years ago for better career opportunities.”
→ Phán tích: Sử dụng Mixed Conditional Type 2 (Present → Past) để giải thích tại sao chưa di chuyển, liên kết điều kiện hiện tại với quyết định quá khứ.
Part 2 – Long Turn
Cue card example:
Describe an important decision you made.
Sample answer (Band 8):
“I’d like to talk about my decision to study abroad, which I made five years ago. Looking back, if I hadn’t taken that leap of faith, I wouldn’t be the confident, independent person I am today. At the time, I was quite hesitant because leaving my family was difficult.
However, the experience completely transformed me. If I had stayed in Vietnam and attended a local university, I would probably be living a more comfortable but less fulfilling life now. During my time overseas, I faced numerous challenges – from language barriers to cultural differences – and each one helped me grow.
What I find most interesting is how this single decision created a ripple effect. If I hadn’t met my international classmates, I wouldn’t have developed such a global perspective. These friendships have been invaluable, and they continue to influence how I view the world.
The career opportunities have also been remarkable. If I were less internationally experienced, I would never have been considered for my current position at a multinational company. My employers specifically mentioned that my overseas education was a deciding factor.
Of course, there were trade-offs. If I had remained closer to home, I would have spent more time with my grandparents during their final years, which is something I deeply regret. But overall, I believe it was the right choice for my personal development.”
- Vocabulary phong phú: “leap of faith”, “ripple effect”, “global perspective”
- Cấu trúc câu đa dạng và phức tạp
Part 3 – Discussion
Typical questions using Mixed Conditionals:
Q: “How has technology changed the way people communicate?”
A (Band 8): “Well, technology has revolutionized communication in countless ways. If social media platforms hadn’t been invented, we would still be relying primarily on phone calls and face-to-face meetings. But there’s a darker side to this too. If people weren’t so addicted to their smartphones, we wouldn’t have witnessed such a decline in genuine interpersonal skills over the past decade.
I also think if governments had regulated technology companies more strictly from the beginning, we wouldn’t be dealing with such serious privacy issues today. The reality is that we adopted these technologies so quickly that we didn’t stop to consider the long-term consequences.
On the positive side, though, if distance weren’t such a trivial barrier anymore, many families who were separated geographically would never have been able to maintain such close relationships during the pandemic. So it’s definitely a mixed blessing.”
→ Band 8+ features:
- Sử dụng 4 Mixed Conditionals trong context tự nhiên
- Thể hiện khả năng phân tích đa chiều (positive and negative aspects)
- Liên kết logic giữa các ideas
- Advanced vocabulary: “revolutionized”, “genuine interpersonal skills”, “trivial barrier”, “mixed blessing”
Q: “Do you think education systems have improved over the years?”
A (Band 8-9): “That’s a complex question. In some ways, yes, but in others, we’ve actually regressed. If education policymakers had prioritized critical thinking over rote memorization decades ago, students today would be better equipped to handle the challenges of the 21st century.
The problem is that many Asian education systems are still heavily focused on exam results. If this weren’t the case, we would have seen far more innovation and creativity emerging from schools in recent years. Countries like Finland have shown us that there’s a better way.
Another issue is accessibility. If governments had invested more heavily in rural education infrastructure in the past, we wouldn’t be seeing such stark disparities between urban and rural educational outcomes today. This gap is particularly pronounced in developing countries.
However, I must acknowledge that technology has been a game-changer. If online learning platforms weren’t so widely available now, millions of students would never have had access to quality education during the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s been a silver lining.”
→ Band 9 features:
- Sử dụng 4 Mixed Conditionals với độ chính xác hoàn hảo
- Thể hiện khả năng so sánh và đánh giá phức tạp
- Đưa ra ví dụ cụ thể (Finland, COVID-19)
- Academic vocabulary: “regressed”, “rote memorization”, “disparities”, “silver lining”
- Discourse markers tự nhiên: “In some ways”, “The problem is”, “However”
Writing Task 2
Essay Types Sử Dụng Mixed Conditionals
Opinion Essay:
Topic: Some people believe that university education should be free for all students. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Body paragraph (Band 8):
“Free university education would undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences for society. If more countries had adopted this policy earlier, we would now be seeing a significantly more educated global workforce. Countries like Germany and Norway have demonstrated that free tertiary education is not only feasible but also economically beneficial in the long run. Their graduates enter the job market without crippling debt, which allows them to be more innovative and entrepreneurial.
However, the implementation challenges cannot be ignored. If governments weren’t already struggling with budget deficits, they would have expanded free education programs decades ago. The reality is that funding universal free education requires substantial tax revenue, which many citizens are reluctant to provide. If taxpayers were more willing to contribute, we wouldn’t have witnessed such dramatic increases in student loan debt over the past twenty years.
Moreover, if free education had been the norm historically, universities might not have developed the same quality of facilities and programs that we see today. The competitive nature of paid education has, in some cases, driven institutions to improve their offerings. Therefore, while I generally support more affordable education, if we were to implement completely free university education, we would need to have established robust quality control mechanisms beforehand to ensure standards don’t decline.”

Problem-Solution Essay:
Topic: Environmental pollution has become one of the most serious issues worldwide. What are the causes of this problem and what measures can be taken to solve it?
Body paragraph analyzing causes (Band 8-9):
“The roots of our current environmental crisis can be traced back to decisions made decades ago. If industrial nations had prioritized environmental protection over economic growth in the post-war period, we would not be facing such catastrophic climate change today. The pursuit of rapid industrialization, particularly in the 1950s through 1980s, came at an enormous environmental cost that we are only now beginning to fully understand.
Additionally, if consumers weren’t so driven by materialistic values, manufacturers would never have adopted the ‘planned obsolescence’ model that has generated mountains of waste over the past fifty years. This business strategy, which deliberately designs products to have limited lifespans, has contributed significantly to pollution. If this practice had been regulated or banned when it first emerged, landfills wouldn’t be overflowing with electronic waste and plastics as they are now.
Another critical factor is agricultural practices. If farming hadn’t become so heavily industrialized and chemical-dependent in the latter half of the 20th century, we would currently be dealing with far less water and soil pollution. The Green Revolution, while solving hunger problems, introduced pesticides and fertilizers that continue to contaminate ecosystems.”

- Specific examples: planned obsolescence, Green Revolution
Discussion Essay:
Topic: Some people think that personal happiness is directly related to economic success, while others believe there are other factors. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Body paragraph (Band 8):
“Those who link happiness to wealth argue that financial security eliminates major sources of stress. If people didn’t have to worry about money, they would be free to pursue their passions and interests, which would naturally lead to greater contentment. Research from developed nations shows that if citizens weren’t guaranteed a certain standard of living through economic prosperity, they would never have ranked so highly on global happiness indices. Countries like Switzerland and Singapore demonstrate this correlation clearly.
However, the opposing view holds that money beyond a certain threshold contributes little to well-being. If wealth were truly the key to happiness, billionaires would be the happiest people on earth, yet many struggle with depression and isolation. Furthermore, if materialistic societies automatically produced happier citizens, we wouldn’t be witnessing rising rates of mental health issues in affluent nations today. Japan and South Korea, despite their economic success, face serious problems with work-life balance and life satisfaction.
My perspective is nuanced. If I had to choose, I would say that economic stability is necessary but not sufficient for happiness. If humans weren’t social creatures who need meaningful relationships and purpose, perhaps money alone would suffice. But the reality is more complex – we need both financial security and non-material fulfillment.”

Topic: Impact of Social Media
“Social media has significantly changed how people interact with each other. If platforms like Facebook and Instagram hadn’t been created, people would still be communicating mainly through email and phone calls. This shift has brought both advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, if we didn’t have social media, many long-distance friendships would have faded away over time. People can now easily keep in touch with friends who live in different countries. On the other hand, if teenagers weren’t so focused on getting likes and followers, they would probably be more confident in real life. Many young people today judge their self-worth based on social media validation. If parents had understood these risks earlier, they might have been more careful about allowing their children to use these platforms. Overall, while social media has made communication easier, it has also created new psychological challenges that society is still learning to address.”

Band 8-9 Sample
Topic: The Role of Technology in Education
“The integration of technology into educational systems represents one of the most transformative shifts in modern pedagogy. If educational institutions had embraced digital tools more proactively in the 1990s, we would currently be witnessing a far more equitable global distribution of quality education. The reluctance of many traditional educators to adopt technological innovations has created a significant lag between what is technologically possible and what is actually implemented in classrooms.
Consider the implications of artificial intelligence and adaptive learning systems. If these technologies weren’t still in their infancy, they would have already revolutionized personalized learning by now, allowing each student to progress at their optimal pace rather than being constrained by the one-size-fits-all approach that still dominates most schools. The potential is staggering – if we had invested more heavily in educational technology research two decades ago, the achievement gap between privileged and underprivileged students would likely be narrowing rather than widening today.
Nevertheless, technology is not a panacea. If screen-based learning were genuinely superior to traditional methods in all contexts, we would have observed universally improved outcomes in schools that have gone fully digital, yet the evidence is decidedly mixed. Some studies suggest that if students weren’t so easily distracted by the multifunctionality of digital devices, these tools would indeed be more effective than conventional teaching materials. The challenge lies not in the technology itself, but in developing the metacognitive skills necessary to use it judiciously.
Perhaps most critically, if policymakers were more attuned to the pedagogical research, they would never have implemented technology for technology’s sake without proper teacher training and curriculum redesign. The cautionary tales from hasty digitalization efforts remind us that sustainable educational transformation requires systemic change, not merely technological substitution.”

- Discourse marker “consequently” creates logical flow
Example with “Given that”:
“Given that climate change is now irreversible, if governments had acted more decisively three decades ago, we would at least be dealing with a manageable problem rather than an existential threat.”
Example with “Despite the fact that”:
“Despite the fact that technology would be far more advanced now if we had invested more in research, funding for scientific projects continues to be inadequate.”
Example with “The fact remains that”:
“The fact remains that if people weren’t so resistant to change, many social reforms would have been implemented successfully years ago.”

Mixed Conditionals vs Conditional Type 2 vs Conditional Type 3
| Tiêu chí | Mixed Conditional Type 1 | Mixed Conditional Type 2 | Conditional Type 2 | Conditional Type 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Công thức | If + had + V3, would + V1 | If + V2/were, would have + V3 | If + V2/were, would + V1 | If + had + V3, would have + V3 |
| Ví dụ | “If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.” | “If I were braver, I would have traveled solo last year.” | “If I were rich, I would travel the world.” | “If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.” |

- Ví dụ: “If I had taken that job offer in 2019, I would be living in London now.”
- IELTS Speaking Part 3: “If governments had invested more in renewable energy earlier, we wouldn’t be so dependent on fossil fuels today.”
- IELTS Writing Task 2: “If stricter regulations had been implemented decades ago, air pollution would not be such a serious problem now.”
- Ví dụ: “If I weren’t so afraid of flying, I would have accepted the overseas position last year.”
- IELTS Speaking Part 2: “If I were more outgoing, I would have made more friends during my first year at university.”
- IELTS Writing Task 2: “If people were more environmentally conscious, they would have adopted sustainable practices much earlier.”
- Ví dụ: “If I had more money, I would buy a new car.”
- IELTS Speaking: “If I lived closer to my workplace, I would have more free time.”
- IELTS Writing: “If governments provided free healthcare, citizens would be healthier.”
- Ví dụ: “If I had studied harder, I would have gotten better grades.”
- IELTS Speaking Part 2: “If I had prepared more thoroughly, I would have performed better in that interview.”
- IELTS Writing: “If governments had acted sooner, the economic crisis would have been less severe.”
Quick decision guide:
❌ SAI:
“If I had studied abroad, I would have been more confident now.”
✅ ĐÚNG:
“If I had studied abroad, I would be more confident now.”
Khi kết quả ở hiện tại (“now”), bạn KHÔNG dùng “would have + V3” mà phải dùng “would + V1”.
Quy tắc:
- Past condition → Present result: would/could/might + base verb
- Past condition → Past result: would/could/might + have + V3
Lưu ý:
Chú ý các time markers:
- Now, today, currently, at present → Dùng “would be/do/have”
- Yesterday, last year, then → Dùng “would have done”
Ví dụ thêm:
❌ “If they had invested in Bitcoin, they would have been rich today.”
✅ “If they had invested in Bitcoin, they would be rich today.”
❌ SAI:
“If I studied harder when I was young, I would be more successful now.”
✅ ĐÚNG:
“If I had studied harder when I was young, I would be more successful now.”
So sánh:
- Conditional Type 2: “If I studied harder [now], I would be successful.” (hiện tại → hiện tại)
- Mixed Conditional: “If I had studied harder [in the past], I would be successful [now].” (quá khứ → hiện tại)
Lưu ý:
Nếu câu có time marker rõ ràng trong quá khứ (when I was young, last year, in 2010), bạn PHẢI dùng Past Perfect trong if-clause.
Ví dụ thêm:
❌ “If the government implemented better policies in 2010, the economy would be stronger now.”
✅ “If the government had implemented better policies in 2010, the economy would be stronger now.”
Lỗi 3: Nhầm lẫn giữa hai loại Mixed Conditionals
❌ SAI:
“If I had been more confident, I would have applied for that job now.”
✅ ĐÚNG:
“If I were more confident, I would have applied for that job last year.”
- Type 1: Past condition (had + V3) → Present result (would + V1)
- Type 2: Present condition (were/V2) → Past result (would have + V3)
Logic check:
- Bạn muốn nói về tính cách/đặc điểm HIỆN TẠI ảnh hưởng đến quá khứ? → Type 2 (were → would have done)
→ Type 1 (had done → would do)
Ví dụ thêm:
❌ “If I had been better at languages, I would have studied abroad now.”
✅ “If I were better at languages, I would have studied abroad.” (Type 2)
HOẶC
✅ “If I had studied languages harder, I would be bilingual now.” (Type 1)
Lỗi 4: Quên dùng “were” cho tất cả ngôi trong câu điều kiện
❌ SAI:
“If I was more outgoing, I would have made more friends at university.”
✅ ĐÚNG:
“If I were more outgoing, I would have made more friends at university.”
Giải thích:
Trong câu điều kiện (đặc biệt Type 2 và Mixed Type 2), luôn dùng “were” cho tất cả các ngôi (I, he, she, it, we, you, they), không dùng “was”.
Quy tắc formal English:
- ✅ “If I/he/she/it were…”
- ❌ “If I/he/she/it was…”
Lưu ý:
Trong giao tiếp thông thường, người bản xứ có thể dùng “was”, nhưng trong IELTS (formal context), bạn NÊN dùng “were” để thể hiện grammar awareness và formal register.
Ví dụ thêm:
❌ “If the government was more responsible, these problems would have been avoided.”
✅ “If the government were more responsible, these problems would have been avoided.”
❌ “If she was living in a different city, she would have attended that conference.”
✅ “If she were living in a different city, she would have attended that conference.”
Lỗi 5: Dùng “would” trong cả hai mệnh đề
❌ SAI:
“If I would have known about the opportunity, I would be working there now.”
✅ ĐÚNG:
“If I had known about the opportunity, I would be working there now.”
KHÔNG BAO GIỜ dùng “would” hoặc “would have” trong mệnh đề if.
Quy tắc vàng:
- ✅ If-clause: had + V3 (NOT would have + V3)
- ✅ Main clause: would + V1 hoặc would have + V3
Tại sao lỗi này phổ biến:
Học viên Việt Nam thường dịch trực tiếp từ tiếng Việt “Nếu tôi đã biết…” thành “If I would have known”, nhưng đây là sai hoàn toàn.
Lưu ý:
Cấu trúc “would have” CHỈ xuất hiện trong main clause (mệnh đề chính), KHÔNG BAO GIỜ trong if-clause.
Ví dụ thêm:
❌ “If I would have been more careful, I wouldn’t be in this situation.”
✅ “If I had been more careful, I wouldn’t be in this situation.”
❌ “If technology would have been invented earlier, life would be easier now.”
✅ “If technology had been invented earlier, life would be easier now.”
Lỗi 6: Quên time marker hoặc dùng sai time marker
❌ SAI:
“If I had accepted the job, I would be happier.” (không rõ kết quả ở thời điểm nào)
✅ ĐÚNG:
“If I had accepted the job, I would be happier now.”
Time markers quan trọng:
- Present result: now, today, currently, at present, at the moment
- Past result: yesterday, last week, ago, then, at that time
❌ “If governments had acted, we wouldn’t face this crisis.” (khi nào face?)
✅ “If governments had acted earlier, we wouldn’t be facing this crisis today.”
❌ SAI:
“If I studied abroad and if I had more confidence, I would be fluent now.”
✅ ĐÚNG:
“If I had studied abroad and were more confident, I would be fluent now.”
HOẶC (tách thành 2 câu rõ ràng hơn):
“If I had studied abroad, I would be fluent now. Additionally, if I were more confident, I would use English more often.”
Top 7 mistakes Vietnamese learners make – Summary:
- Dùng “would have V3” cho kết quả hiện tại → Phải dùng “would V1”
- Dùng Simple Past thay vì Past Perfect cho điều kiện quá khứ → Phải dùng “had V3”
- Nhầm lẫn Type 1 và Type 2 → Kiểm tra time markers
- Dùng “was” thay vì “were” → Luôn dùng “were” trong conditional
- Dùng “would” trong if-clause → Không bao giờ dùng “would/would have” sau “if”
- Thiếu time markers → Thêm “now”, “today”, “last year” để rõ ràng
- Trộn lẫn nhiều loại conditionals → Giữ logic thời gian nhất quán

Đáp Án Bài Tập 4 – Sample Answers:
Question 1: Describe an important decision you made in the past and how it affects your life now.
“One of the most significant decisions I made was choosing to study in Hanoi rather than staying in my hometown. If I hadn’t made that decision five years ago, I wouldn’t be as independent and confident as I am today. Moving to a big city forced me to step out of my comfort zone and learn essential life skills like budgeting, time management, and problem-solving. If I had stayed in my small town, I would probably be living a more comfortable but less exciting life now. While I sometimes miss my family, this decision has shaped who I am today.”
Question 2: Talk about a skill you wish you had learned when you were younger.
“I really wish I had learned to play a musical instrument when I was a child. If I had started piano lessons at a young age, I would be quite proficient by now and could enjoy playing music as a hobby. If my parents weren’t so focused on academic subjects, they might have enrolled me in music classes years ago. Research shows that learning music early develops cognitive abilities, so if I had that foundation, I would probably be better at problem-solving and creative thinking today. It’s one of my few regrets, though it’s never too late to start learning.”
Question 3: How has technology changed the way people work?
“Technology has fundamentally transformed the workplace in numerous ways. If computers and the internet hadn’t been developed, we would still be working in traditional offices with paper-based systems. The most dramatic change has been the rise of remote work – if video conferencing tools didn’t exist, the pandemic would have been absolutely catastrophic for businesses globally. However, there are downsides too. If people weren’t so constantly connected to work through their devices, they would have achieved better work-life balance over the past decade. We’re still learning how to manage these new technologies effectively.”
Question 4: Do you think education systems have improved over the years?
“That’s a complex question with no simple answer. In some aspects, yes, but in others, we’ve actually regressed. If education systems had evolved to focus more on critical thinking and creativity earlier, students today would be better prepared for the modern job market. Unfortunately, many Asian countries still emphasize rote memorization and exam scores. If this weren’t the case, we would have seen more innovation and entrepreneurship emerging from schools in recent years. However, technology has been a positive force – if online learning platforms hadn’t been developed, millions of students wouldn’t have been able to continue their education during the pandemic. So it’s a mixed picture.”
Question 5: What impact has globalization had on traditional cultures?
“Globalization has had profound effects on traditional cultures, both positive and negative. If cultures hadn’t been exposed to international influences, they would be much more isolated today, which would mean less cultural exchange and understanding. However, the downside is significant. If Western culture weren’t so dominant globally, many traditional customs and languages wouldn’t have disappeared over the past few decades. For example, many indigenous languages are now endangered. If governments had taken cultural preservation more seriously earlier, we would currently have more diverse cultural landscapes. It’s a delicate balance between embracing global connection and maintaining cultural identity.”
Đáp Án Bài Tập 5 – Sample Body Paragraphs:
Topic 1: Free university education
“The implementation of free university education would have far-reaching implications for society. Proponents argue that if more countries had adopted this policy decades ago, we would now be witnessing a significantly more educated and economically prosperous global workforce. Evidence from Nordic countries supports this view – their graduates enter professional life without debt burdens, allowing them to be more innovative and entrepreneurial. However, the financial challenges cannot be dismissed. If governments weren’t already struggling with budget constraints, they would have expanded free education programs years ago. The reality is that funding universal free education requires substantial tax revenue, which many citizens oppose. Furthermore, if free education had been the historical norm, universities might not have developed the same quality of facilities and programs we see today, as competition has driven many institutions to improve. Therefore, while I support more affordable education, if we were to implement completely free university education, we would need to have established robust quality control mechanisms first to ensure academic standards remain high.” (168 words)
Topic 2: Environmental problems
“The roots of our current environmental crisis lie in decisions made decades ago. If industrial nations had prioritized sustainability over rapid economic growth in the post-war period, we would not be facing such catastrophic climate change today. The relentless pursuit of industrialization, particularly from the 1950s through the 1980s, created environmental damage that is now difficult to reverse. Consumer behavior has also played a critical role – if people weren’t so driven by materialistic values, manufacturers would never have adopted the planned obsolescence model that has generated mountains of waste over the past fifty years. This deliberate strategy of designing products with limited lifespans has contributed enormously to pollution. If farming practices hadn’t become so industrialized and chemical-dependent, we would currently be dealing with far less water and soil contamination. To address these issues, governments must implement stricter environmental regulations, invest heavily in renewable energy, and promote sustainable consumption patterns. Additionally, if education systems were more focused on environmental literacy, previous generations would have made more eco-conscious decisions. Only through comprehensive systemic change can we hope to mitigate the damage already done.” (186 words)
Topic 3: Social media’s negative impact
“While social media has brought undeniable benefits, its negative impacts on society are increasingly apparent. If platforms like Facebook and Instagram hadn’t been created, we wouldn’t be witnessing such epidemic levels of anxiety and depression among young people today. Research consistently shows correlations between social media usage and mental health problems, particularly among teenagers who compare themselves to curated online personas. The issue of misinformation is equally serious – if people were more digitally literate, they wouldn’t have been so easily manipulated by fake news during recent elections. This has undermined democratic processes globally. Privacy concerns add another dimension to the problem. If technology companies had been regulated more strictly from the beginning, we wouldn’t be dealing with such massive data breaches and privacy violations now. Personal information is routinely collected, sold, and exploited without meaningful consent. However, context matters. If social media platforms didn’t exist, families separated by distance would never have been able to maintain such close connections during the pandemic. Therefore, while I acknowledge some benefits, I believe the negative impacts outweigh the positives, and urgent regulatory intervention is needed.” (185 words)

✅ Không bao giờ dùng “would/would have” trong if-clause
✅ Nhớ thêm time markers (now, today, last year) để làm rõ nghĩa
